Hi, before i start i'd like to say io am VERY new to all this. I seem to keep having the same problem. I started off using this youtube guide on how to slove a rubik's cube:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=HsQIoPyfQzM

Towards the end where he says "you should have solved one side but also the first layer...." - I have solved the green side but the right hand piece of each side on the top layer is the opposite to where it should be (sorry, my terminology isn't too good yet either.) So for example, on the white side, the top right piece is yellow and on the yellow side, the top right piece is white (and the same for the orange and red sides but with the top left piece).

If you understood that (and quite frankly you need a medal if you did) can you tell me what I'm doing wrong to keep getting this? Is there a way I can get it to be correct without starting again (for example by using an algorithm)?

Thanks
Jenni

Ok, if you would recommend a better method then that would be great. I just took a liking to this one because i thought he explained it quite well and i could see what he was doing on the video so if you have some video methods then that would be much appreciated :)

Jenni your right dan brown does a great job on explaining what to do its just that what hes teaching is junk :D. use the method kevin showed you.

Wait... Dan brown make it looks easy to solve it. And he's video is the reason why I start cubing in the beginning.

He gives impression that solve a Rubiks Cube is easy, It motivates peoples...

The method he teaches isn't very fast. However, Nakai Velasquez averaged 33 seconds using this method at the Indiana Winter Open this year. It was amazing.

I learned from Dan Brown, and his videos motivated me to go buy a Rubik's brand cube (instead of use my slow 'Magic Cube'), and I learned VERY easily.

Switching to Fridrich wasn't hard at all, but the LL is done very differently than badmephisto's, and for that I reason I too recommend badmephisto's tutorials.

========================

What you did wrong was corner placement. Take out the corners and place them again correctly. Take one corner (3-colored pieces) piece out, and re-place it between it's correct edge pieces (2-colored pieces).

Check to make sure first that all of your edges are correctly placed. The White is opposite yellow, and the red is opposite the orange. When you've placed them correctly, line them up so that the red-white pieces is between the red center and the white center, and do the same for the other 3 edges. And then place the corners according to the colors on them. The green-red-yellow corner piece will be placed between the the red-yellow edges on the green face.

Doing this correctly, when finish the green side, you'll also finish an entire layer. This means that from a side view of the green face, one side will be all red, one side will be all white, one side will be all orange, and the other will be all yellow.

Congratulations, now you move on the second layer.

Ok now I'm up to the yellow cross about 5:20 into the second video. I have a cube that looks like the one in my picture below. But this doesn't match any of the 7 cases he describes. Have I done something wrong? What should I do to fix this? I have tried the 2 fish algorithms he explains but can't seem to get it to work.

Thanks again
Jenni

If you have completed correctly the first two layers and the last layer is like that, take a corner out and put it back correctly (matching an algorithm badephisto gives)! This position is impossible. Did you have a pop?

Sorry, can you just clarify which algorithm you mean? Do you mean the algorithm he uses in solving the white layer about 9:15 into the first video (e.g. R U R')?

The yellow lines mean that a yellow sticker is on the side. Is yours exactly like that? Check and make sure the first two layers (including the white side) are completed.

If they are, You will have to take apart the pieces from the top layer and rearrange them into the solved state, then mix it up and try again. Rotate the up face 45 degrees, pry out one of the edge pieces (not corner) and take the top layer apart from there. The center piece should stay, however.

Ok well since I kept arriving at the same problem over and over again I decided to take bamman's advice and pop out the offending piece and put it back in the right place. Then I followed the rest of badmephisto's video and I did it!!! :D

Now I just have to start learning all the different algorithms and seeing if I can remember them. Thanks alot for your help guys :)

How did you get you cube like that in the first place?

Since it seems like you like his vids (I do too), watch his how to be a speedcuber video for what to learn next (after you get this method down).

I'm not sure how it got like that, it's not my rubik's cube to be honest. I found it at my inlaw's house and hadn't seen one for years and was fascinated by it. It's quite possible that someone else has taken it all apart from some reason and not put it back together correctly. Anyway, after putting the piece back in the right place i have scrambled it and re-solved it again afew times and think I'm starting to get it :)
