[WR] 4x4 Average 35.52 Giovanni Contardi

This is a bit less about Giovanni's record, (kudos!!) but about this earmuff thing. IF you would take the rules literally it wouldn't be allowed because of:

'A5b) While inspecting or solving the puzzle, the competitor must not have any assistance from anyone or any object (other than the surface). Penalty: disqualification of the solve.'

If you take this rule literally:
- earmuffs = an object other than the surface + its an object other than those provided by the organization (chair, table etc are provided by the organization). Also it IS assitance (it helps the competitor to concentrate, by changing the conditions in the room i.e. noise)

Maybe this is worth discussing and make some proposals for the new 2012 regulations to make this more clear? I don't think anyone would want to make earmuffs illegal to use... especially during blindfolded solving.

@WR: really cool, though I feel a bit bad for Dan :( WC will be a hell of a battle!

off topic: What about glasses and contact lenses? I don't see the WCA forbidding that.

on topic: Amazing speed, Giovanni's 3x3 part makes his cube look like a GuHong. I also noticed that he does x2 moves when pairing, just like Faz.

IMO, the standard environment should be quiet, therefore, earmuffs doesn't function as assistance.

Bad example, glasses and contact lenses dont give the person any sort of advantage. They only help to eliminate the disadvantage of needing them. In other words the condition of the room is changed so that it is more equal to non-visually impaired competitors. Or they assist the competitor but not the solve.

I agree that earmuffs should be allowed though
