Hey,
I had my first sub 30 avg today.
27.88, 27.44, (23.38), 35.13, 32.15, 28.28, (37.36), 31.10, 25.40, 25.98, 26.04, 28.00= 28.74
I started cubing for speed in January 2007, and I was wondering how long it took you guys get your first sub 30 average? Is my progress fast, normal, or slow?
-Thanks

I started speedcubing in January 2007 as well, but I'm still nowhere near a 30 second average. :( (My best avg of 10 is 37.84 seconds.) So you're certainly doing better than me.

But maybe that's because I spend too much of my time with BLD and big cubes, so I hardly spend any time practicing the regular 3x3x3. The main times I practice 3x3x3 are in the last step of the 5x5x5 (and, with parity thrown in, on the 4x4x4), and to solve a DNF on a 3x3x3 BLD so I can apply the next scramble.

The main reasons why I am still around the 27/28 seconds range (best average so far is 23.5) is that I still use sort of a beginners method and because I like to solve every puzzle I own. 3 Months ago I discovered blindfolded, 2 Months ago I got a MegaMinx, last month I discovered Square-1 and right now I am experimenting with clock, pyraminx and 3x3x3 fewest moves. I am also relatively fast on 4x4x4 and 5x5x5.

I think that if you focus on 3x3x3 you can get sub 30 in 2 months and sub 20 in 6 months "easily", but I don't think that would be a fun way to reach sub 20. For me the next goal is probably to learn 4x4x4 and 5x5x5 blindfolded, while also practising F2L and PLL.

I also started in January and can now average 23/24s. I hit sub-30 on April, 17th. But i can solve the cube for about 3 years now, but never tried to be fast at it til January.

P.S.: Why have so many people started cubing in January? (Is it because of Will Smith's 'Pursuit of Happyness'? (thanks Kai :)))

I started in Febuary and began averaging sub30 two months ago (I guess)
now I average 25. so you'r abit slower than me ;)

I cant tell how or why I started cubing. it just came to me, like all of the other things I do did

I started speed cubing in January, and I immediately learned Fridrich (like, in a week and a half). Right now I average around 23 seconds.

started speedcubing in march, after SATs and got first sub 30 in late june/early july, *note: i've had previous knowledge on how to solve the rubik's cube, so yea.. u'r progressing fairly fast

I started learning how to solve a Rubik's cube around late January/early February 07 and got first sub 30 average around late May... (Took me around 4 months to get sub 30 -_-)

I got my first sub 20 average on 07/07/07 (a little more than a month after first sub 30).

Right now I'm averaging around 17-19 seconds and almost got a sub 15 average (2 months from first sub 30 average =D)

I'm using Intuitive Fridrich F2l and 3 Look LL... need to learn OLL...

skyuzo: Wow! How much time do you spend on it?

I didn't really spend much time on it before I got a sub-30 average, but these last 2 months I've been spending around 2-5 hours on it...

I have heard Mátyás spends up to 4 hours every day training himself.
So with 5 hours per day, you know where you are headed to. :p

Wow you guys are crazy!

I starting cubing in Early April. My current average is 33.43 secs. Im so close to sub-30 avg. I hate it tho b/c for me the worst part is PLL. I know 13/21, so that is what kills my sub-30 chances. :/

haha, i guess if i learn how to solve the cube blindfolded and practice 5 hrs a day, i can beat kuti's record of 54 secs ? hahha

i've got to force myself to learn OLL though, too darn lazy.

and practice OH so i can be half as good as u and rama.

isn't it amazing that kuti got his avg down from 60+ to sub 30 in like half an year ? and i still find his 7 blindfold solve in 21 mins amazing, i don't really get it, is it like he has to look at all the cubes at once, put on blindfold and solve ? if that's the case, then he must have an amazing memory remembering everything for the 7 cubes and avg like a 3 min solve.
