It took me a long time to beat my 14.27 (NR) from 4 years ago. I've been trying to get a sub-20 average for a long while, so I was surprised to get this in an average where the best counting time was 24.

Damn, 13 is crazy fast for your/our speed. I average about 20/21 and my PB is 12 at home, but fastest in comp is 16. Your solve didn't look lucky/crazy, what stops you from averaging 13? :p

I've failed official sub 20 averages a few times too: 19.63 20.05 18.96 28.65 28.93 and also 19.44 20.53 19.16 20.56 24.27

Good luck getting sub 20 official!

Good question. I just did a few solves and got an avg12 of 21.47 containing a sub-20 avg5: 21.14, 21.01, (17.56), 24.24, (25.59), 23.76, 23.51, 19.97, 20.46, 17.98, 18.02, 24.65

This solve obviously had a PLL skip, which saves at least 3-4 seconds.
I've found that being tired (and losing sleep the night before a competition is... common) makes me slower, and keeping very warm prevents my hands from being cold and sluggish. But apart from that, I've found it hard to get better competition times through pure practice. Getting "in the zone" helps, but it's not reliable: I didn't even make 3x33x finals at this competition, because I averaged 2 seconds slower than I wanted.

Now that I'm filming all my competition solves, I think I should look at them and analyze my splits and common mistakes. If it can help competitive dancers, it should work for speedcubing, right? :-P
