No one really knows for sure, but there's a few main theories:
1. He's a robot/cyborg/synthetic being dude, and not technically alive (seems a bit weak though because other robots can't lift the hammer)

2. He's worthy (In Thor, Odin's curse is "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor", so anyone can hold the hammer as long as they're worthy) Film theory has a great video about who in the MCU may be worthy, but it has some big spoilers for other movies

3. It has to do with the stone in his head (don't recall how much that stone has been explained by Civil War, but they are explained eventually)

(writing this has shown me just how much of an MCU nerd I am lol)

Ok, that makes sense (kind of)! From what I've gathered so far about the Infinity Stones, they've found 4, and (since I'm watching them in timeline order as opposed to phases) I've seen Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, when he's taking out the Infinity Guantlet. The mind stone could definitely be what's making him worthy. Should I wait to watch the film theory video until after Endgame?

Yes, definitely wait. There's some massive Endgame spoilers in it
