So, I've been using Type A for a long while now, and I just went to my first competition in Toronto this weekend. I learned very quickly that I keep my cube way too tense, and that I could be doing my solves much faster. However, when I tried to loosen my cube after competition, I popped almost every solve, I had to deliberately slow down just to make it not pop, and it wasn't very loose.

So, I ask of you, what cube should I look for if I want a cube that will allow it to be a little loose and have little chance of pops?

Personally I think you should try a Type D.
They are slightly better/worse than a type A.
Or you can use what I use, the D-CAF combo.
I wouldn't recommend the Type Ds. At least the new ones. The new ones are bad, because of the screws.

Perhaps you should try the Rubiks.com DIYs? They're pretty good but the center caps fall out a lot. That shouldn't be a big problem as you can put a piece of paper under the center cap so it won't fall off.

My 2 DIY's just shipped today :)

Yeah, the new Type D cubes have such crap screws. Man it's disappointing :( I'm going to try different cubes from now on. I'm ordering a white Joy cube soon, and i plan on ordering a Rubik's.com DIY soon as well, also white.

I just got a Rubiks DIY about a week ago. Get it! It is by far my best cube and the high cost was totally worth it. It feels perfect imo.

Awesome :D Have you got a white one?

Whats the D-CAF combo? Is it beter than your "secret cube"? =P

Type D Springs, centers, and center caps
Type C Screws and washers
Type A Core
Type F Edges

Ahh how excellent, no a cube with no corners. No wonder its so good, it must yield fast times neh?

are Rubiks DIY the cubes from Rubiks.com?

like the kits that they sell with cube lube and random stickers?

Yes the kits are different because they have different packages of lubrication and stickers. Notice there is also a white Rubiks.com DIY in the shop.

I tried PM-ing Dae Ja Voo but I can't send him anything because he has too many stored PMs. So I'm asking in public.

I have an old white Type D with old type A core. The moment I put the core inside, it was amazing. However, after playing with it some time, it gets worse and worse? What's going on here? It used to be significantly better than my white Type A but now the white Type A is a lot more comfortable to speedcube with. What's going on? My Type D hybrid is now locky and pops a lot more than before.

Please advise. Thanks. :)

Erm, I'm aware this is off-topic, but since we're talking about the hardware side of a few specific cubes why not? I am somewhat hijacking this thread though, so I apologise for that.

I tried out Arnaud Van Galen's white type F in Germany and I was blown away by it. I was getting a gang of fast solves, and I am not even very hip on white plastic. I ordered some as soon as I got home. I haven't tried this hybrid thing everyone is getting in on though. Maybe I should.

It seems that your screws are getting loose inside the core. When the screws have too much room and stuff, the cube starts locking up. Put some loctite threadlocker 242 into it and let it cure completely.

Oh, and the thread starter, I have a black Type D with old type A core (with skinny screws treated with loctite) and a 2006 Rubik's DIY. They are both AWESOME. They cut corners really well, turn fast, don't lock up.

The Rubik's DIY, though, don't loosen it by loosening the screws. That will make it TOO loose and will make the cube pieces pop like crazy. Instead, have the cube reasonably tight and twist like CRAZY. That will completely break in the cube pieces and then if you loosen the screws just a tiny bit, the Rubik's DIY will be one of the best cubes you ever had. :) (keep in mind that my Rubik's DIY is mold from 2006, not 2008)
