[Official] Visually Impaired person solving a Rubiks Cube

Simply beautiful. You can do anything you set your heart to do. Very inspiring indeed.

Wow, that is so impressive. So apparently special stickers are allowed for visually impaired competitors?

That's totally badass. Is he completely blind?

He should train to get super fast at bld solving, then memo with his fingers in the 15 seconds and gogogo

I think an optimistic guess would be 30s memo due to needing to feel the cube. He's very impressive but I don't think he could get close to that.

Could he compete in bld though? The textured cube for memo and another cube for execution?

For BLD I think someone may dictate him the memo, and let him use the cube to feel position of piece in his own version. Once the memo is done he can actually do, but understanding his version of memo would be very difficult, memo should reach him.

I think for memo, he could just have his cube and then a regular stickered cube, and then just explain to the judges his vision impairment, they could scramble his cube and a stickered cube the same, and then he could memo his cube and then solve the regular stickered cube.

He was talking to the delegate about BLD solving.. SO he can memo with his textured cube, The Judge gives him another plain cube in his desired orientation (decided presolve) and he should solve.. Would be awesome to see it :D

I'm very curious as to whether or not a different method is preferable when solving by feel. Is a corners-first method actually superior, perhaps? You would think it might be - lookahead is very different, since it requires feeling all the pieces you're interested in. By going corners-first, you can ignore the edges at first - perhaps it's less to have to feel at a given time.

I assume he must have better awareness of what's going on at the back and the bottom of the cube than the front but would need the algorithms rewritten to take proper advantage of that. I wonder how a decent solver would do using that cube blindfolded.

but if he has to feel for memo, then he could just feel while solving (I'm not saying he would do that)
for it to work there would have to be 2 cubes scrambled the same way, 1 would be textured, and the other not.

3d1) Competitors with a medically documented visual disability may use textured puzzles with different textures on different faces. Textures/patterns must be uniform per face. Each face should have a distinct colour, to aid in scrambling and judging.

It's always cool to see people doing this in comp. I wonder, what is the fastest time a blind person has solved the cube?

Note that I say "blind" because I'm not sure solving with a mild to moderate visual impairment is really all that different from normal solving. Without my glasses I'm very nearsighted, and would probably be considered nearly blind if glasses didn't exist. I can't read text at arm's length, but I can do sub20 solves while holding the cube at arm's length. It's kind of amusing to have to put on my glasses to read the timer right behind the cube I just solved. Anyway, the point is, I'm interested in the fact that the cuber must recognize pieces by feel, as opposed to the fact that the cuber doesn't have normal vision.
