U U vs U2? (y U) vs d?

Guys, have you noticed top cubers like Feliks and Mats are using more U U or U' U' and less U2/U2' and getting ridiculous times with that style?(Feliks has been getting some un-official 4's) Does anyone know why? I was trying it myself and to me it feels from the start of a solve to the end one long smooth alg. What's your take?

I don't know how you even do U2 as a single move. U U or U' U' is all I ever use, a quick flick with the index finger or (if fingertricks permit) index then middle, and it's lightning fast.

What Arkwell forgot to mention is that at least Feliks does both U turns with the same index finger, not index+middle. At least the few times I've seen in recent videos. Did surprise me. Then again, I'm so out of the loop and have no idea what you kids are up to these days.

I'm not as fast as Feliks, but...

I find that double flicks are usually faster, but there are times during F2L where my hands are not gripped right for it. Sometimes the slight regrips necessary to double flick reduces fluidity.

That being said, I was still surprised to see a slow-mo of Feliks and see that he doesn't double flick (at least in that particular solve).

I get the impression that U U is mostly an AUF thing. You'd be a fool to not use U2 in 4x4x4 reduction orientation parity for example.

Only talking about 3x3, haven't looked at his larger cube solves.

Exactly, In Brest's reconstructions I never paid attention to the 'View as Executed' part until the slow mo of his 5.88 single at Worlds where you can see him using the index finger twice for almost all U2's(for F2L) except sometimes OLLs & PLLs then I started to go back and look at Brest recon's and he's done it more and more then when you go to the 'Accomplishment Thread' where he has a bunch of 4's, the same thing, index finger U2's most of the time and I think those are his own reconstructions.

Just messing around with it for a while and your right, I'm still a noob but the cube is much more stable in my hands and I can get from one F2L case to another easier than more complicated fingertricks but when it's open I still do index/middle.

To be more accurate Feliks 4.79, 5.84, 5.88 all use mostly UU's and pages 3475(he has a 6.37 ave of 12 & 1-5 are a 5.90 ave of 5), 3479(4.54), 3546(4.49) of the Accomplishment Thread have his 4's if you really want to be disappointed. None of this will make us faster but it's interesting to see that while most are looking for better fingertricks he's simplifying his as much as possible and still getting faster!
