Hi guys! I have always wanted to get into speed cubing but im not sure where to start. There is always so many different brands (some times they have 'type' in the name) and im afraid that i would buy the wrong cube.I would like to ask you guys if there is a 'beginners' cube or which is the most commonly bought cube. And also when buying a cube what do you look for(brands?)?

One more thing, do most shops deliver worldwide? as i live in Singapore.

Thanks :)

Welcome!

There seems to be two schools of thought on "beginner" cubes. Some recommend using the "best" cube from the start while others recommend starting with a slower cube and working your way up to the faster ones. It's all personal preference. Unfortunately, we can all only travel the path once so personal preference is hard to validate.

Personally, I would recommend using a DaYan LunHui or ShengShou Wind. These are "beginner" cubes in the sense that they're not as fast yet still very good.

Otherwise, most faster cubers use either the DaYan ZhanChi or the DaYan GuHong. I use a FangCun.

Thanks, What would be the difference between the zhanchi and guhong? I really hate ordering things online so i would just wanna buy a cube that would last me a long time(like beginner > intermediate) without changing my cube

Thanks :)

If you want a cube that will work for all stages of speedcubing, get a Rubik's brand from a local store(Walmart and Target work for the USA) and order a Guhong/Zhanchi from an online store(such as thecubicle.us).

Dayan Zhanchis are very fast, crisp, and clicky. They can feel anywhere from a little bubby to a speed demon.

Dayan Guhongs are a bit slower and have a wholer feel to them, and are often a tad slower. However, this cube can do almost anything, and I have one that's faster than most people's Zhanchis. This has been the preference cube for a long time for many, as it's been out for years.

ahhh thanks!I guess i would get a Guhong then! Do you guys have any idea which website have cheap international shipping?

Thanks!

well asking questions like this means only you're not really into cubing.
Just buy a rubiks brand then let's see if you will enjoy solving it after a week or a month if not then you will just waste your money buying diy cubes.

Why are you assuming he has no experience with cubing?

A Shengshou wind could easily take you from beginner to intermediate - you can definitely average sub-20 with one. I bought a Zhanchi as my first speedcube and I've just ordered a wind anyway because it's a really nice cube and I want to improve my turning accuracy.

With regards to stores with good international shipping: http://www.hknowstore.com and http://www.lightake.com offer free international shipping, and I've recently used http://zcube.cn because their prices are so cheap that even with their expensive shipping it worked out cheaper.

Thanks for posting the link to the singapore based shop! :D Yea i dont have any experience cubing but since good cubes dont cost a bomb compared to norma rubik cube I decided to get a good one that would last me a long time.

Hi I think im gonna order my GuHong in a days time from Zcube.cn as its only $10 usd shipped but im unsure about lube, they only thing that looks like lube that zcube sells is the oil stone , does anyone knows what that is for?And what other things(not cube lube) do people use to lube their cube?I know that shock oil is pretty common around here.

thanks

Differential oil or crc. They are both silicone based and work well. I'm not great at hardware but they do work great. Avoid wd-40 because it eats your plastic. Check this page for more information.

Thanks for the link :)

What advantages would shengshou cubes have over a Guhong or Zhianchi for a beginner?

Thanks :)

Yup i think im gonna order my Guhong right now!:D

@cxinlee It seems like you stay in singapore too!How much and where do you get differential and crc in singapore?

thanks:)

This is where you can get differential oil. I haven't been there so I don't know the cost. CRC is very common and can be found in certain shops selling car items. I believe both should cost about 8 bucks.
