I've been using Roux for 7 years now. Over this period of time, my <M,U> technique has evolved a great deal. Initially, I felt that stage 4 was the weakest part of the method. Now it's a powerful aspect.

I think I occasionally perform some M moves as combinations of two moves (Rr', etc) but this has gradually been phased out as I've improved my M moves. I'm not sure if I do them at all anymore. I will not be covering them here.

I perform the M moves solely with my left hand, but this can just be mirrored. It's something to keep in mind if you want to apply these techniques in OH, but unimportant otherwise.

I use a standard grip with my hands for <M,U> - I don't regrip (ever). My left hand grips the cube with my middle finger and thumb on BL and FL, and my right hand grips the cube with ring finger and thumb on BR and FR. I do not this that this is a 'standard grip'.

This grip allows for double flicks with pinky and ring of left hand, and double flicks with index and middle of the right hand - allowing U2 with right hand, U2' (eido) with left and full control of M slice. U2' is a bit messy for <M,U>, I only use it for one specific EO case. I used to use it for more but phased it out with U2 (that took a while to do, too. I'd been doing it the old way for a looong time and it was hard adjusting).

M'

My M' technique has remained essentially unchanged since I started. I use my left ring finger to push on BD towards DF.

M2

Originally, I was doing a strange M'1.5 R'0.5 r0.5 kind of thing. While quite fast, other people had a better technique of left ring then right ring. Unfortunately this would not fit my style.

With the advent of the modern fingertrick for A Perm with the pinky ring doubleflick, after getting used to that I applied it to M2 instead of D2. This took some getting used to, but now is far superiour than anything else I have found.

Firstly, I use my left pinky finger to push on BD towards DF, then do the same with my left ring finger.

This new technique is the only reason why I can do H Perm so fast one handed.

M

The curse of <M,U>. At least, it used to be. Back before developing this move, I would use a different technique for each situation. For MUM', I would do Rr'UM' - then for U2M I would do an eido U2' and use an index pull from BU to UF in one motion.

These days, I'm doing a left ring push from DB to BU. Seems to work just fine in most situations.

However, I'm not sure if I should be using this exclusively. In cases like U2MU2MU2, moving the ring finger back after the first M move is not something I'm adept at yet to do quickly enough. That string of moves is definitely the weakest point of my technique at the moment. That doesn't mean it's bad, I just think it might be able to be improved. This situation isn't common, but there's a single M layer case that requires it and it'd be nice to find a nice trick for it.

Some ideas I've had for two M moves following after each other inbetween U moves are to use an index pull for the second move. This frees up plenty of time for the left hand to move where it needs to be for the next M move, but the left hand is left in a bad position for doing U moves.

Something else I've though up while writing this post is to throw a left pinky push from DB to BU in there at some point. Maybe pinky then ring or ring then pinky. Will have to practise it.

Hope this helps people develop their fingertricks. Would be interesting to see how others do things, I'd be impressed if you could convince me that you had a better technique for something.

Interesting, I use about the same things.
However, I do M2 with my left ring finger followed by my left middle finger. Your way is probably more efficient, but I only have problems with mine when I'd have to do M2U'
Ring-middle is way faster for me than pinky-ring and now that I think of it I may try right index finger push for M2U'
I guess that makes my style a bit more regrippy, but I think I'll stick to it.

I also do it with ring-middle. Pinky-ring feels really awkward for me - but then, I've never actually practiced it. For M2U', I always do the U' with a right index "OH flick" (FRU -> RBU). It works fine for me right now, but I'm not good enough to need to turn really really fast. I'm definitely going to try the grip described here, it sounds really efficient.

Thank you for posting this! I've been wondering about this for a long time and my struggles with M finger-tricks are addressed in your post. The awkward M' (1.5) ... thing sounds like exactly what I do. I think I will try to adapt your style as I think it may work much better for me.

Maybe change it to "I do not think that this is a particularly common grip."?

The article/post looks really useful, I'm definitely planning on trying out your style. I assume you use this for RrUM stages too? And is there any reason the D layer is free?

Would you be willing to write up a post like this about OH 2gen? :3

Yeah, that works much better.

Nah, I only use this grip for <M,U>. No idea how to describe what I do for the blocks, it's way way way freeer.

If you mean the D layer is free because I'm not holding it, this is not something I've thought about. My right pinky never does anything, so it's probably resting on BRD.

Uh, maybe - it's pretty much the same? I think I do more index pulls for M. 5BLD's technique would probably be more interesting to hear.

Thanks for that explanation of your technique. As a CFCE solver I've put quite a lot work into improving my MU technique, although I feel that I still need improvement in some areas. I currently do M with index finger from BU to FU, which is quite slow, so I'll try your method. I do M2 with double flick ring-middle, which I find very fast. I'm not sure what the benefits are for using pinky-ring for this.
One major way I differ to you is that I'm symmetrical. I switch between M moves with left hand and M moves with right hand depending on the situation (direction of U turns). This means I perform mirror algs in exactly the same way but with hands reversed. On a few algs I switch once in the middle of the alg (e.g. MU' M'UM'U M'U'M'U' MUM2), but I find that this can be done without re-gripping. I found it very awkward when I first started to switch to the other side but now find that it's been beneficial.

I never really learned how M turns were supposed to be done, and middle finger felt natural ._.

M' = middle finger obv BD to DF (right hand)
M = middle finger push DB to BU (right hand)
M2 = ring + middle finger
U = left index finger reverse flick (FLU to LBU)
U' = regular flick
U2 = index + middle finger

always the same. for some CFOP OLL algs i do the downward M push (BU to UF) but all my <M,U> stuff is always done this way. never a right handed U flick or a left handed M.
i had okay M turns and i couldnt do U2 flicks in <M,U> because my grip was all wrong, until i learned to roux. it really helped me a lot.
my old M2 technique for H and Z perm was one big pull with my middle finger from UB to DF. it required an R'0.5 to start but it was pretty smooth. i actually love H and Z perms now because my M turns and U2 have improved so much.

M' = Use left middle finger to push DB to DF
M = Use right index finger (inefficient, I know) to push UB to UF
M2 = Use left middle finger and left ring finger to pust DB to UF

(Just noticed this thread)

For M2, I slightly do half an L move, put my left ring finger on UB, and push it to DF. But after reading these post, I may learn the pinky-ring (or ring-pinky?) double flick.
