how to make a 1x4x4?

Most likely they used CAD and shapeways.

Yeah, unless you bandage an existing cube, you would have to design it yourself. Or you could track down a puzzle maker who has one, and try and buy it.

Ola has them, but I doubt he'll sell you one. You could bandage a 4x4, but eh.

If you've never designed something before, designing a 1x4x4 will be nearly impossible. It is a extremley complex puzzle. I'd say the most realistic thing to do is truncate and bandage a 4x4x4 into a pillowed 2x4x4 (seen here), and then bandage that even more...

Also, Witeden has a 4x4x2 out, but eh. It's actually called a Rylox Prism, and it's kinda ugly IMO and super unproportional. But it would certainly be much cheaper and easier to get than a 4x4x2 like the one above.
