As the title says, I haven't been cubing for long, I'm on about a week of practice. Currently, I can solve the 4x4 Rubik's Revenge, but it takes me about ten minutes. I'm also having trouble memorizing the algorithms for at the end of the puzzle when you solve like a 3x3. I'm hoping to get a Dayan Zhanchi 3x3 and a Maru 5x5 for the holidays, which should help me with the algorithms. I hope that this is a good community, and that I can get competitive times on my cubes.

Sorry, I failed to explain my situation. The only decent cube that I have is a 4x4 Rubik's Revenge, which is why that's the only cube I'm able to solve. I have other really cheap 3x3 cubes, but on almost every turn, they lock up. So far I've lubricated it, but it still hard locks. I've decided that it's best just to get a new cube, and I've brought it down to either the Zhanchi, Lingyun V II, or Guhong

The idea that noobs shouldn't use the best cubes available is an idea that needs to die. Why shouldn't he get a Zhanchi?

Because if he starts to get used to bad fingertricks early, and with a "loose" cube, then he can keep those horrible habits when ever he uses another cube. habits start from when you start something, that's why they're hard to get out of. I personally believe that if you start you should NEVER buy the best equipment, it's also kinda greedy; wanting the best stuff right when you've started. Even when I started four years ago, I never wanted the haiyan memory, or the AV (which were the best back then) it's just a selfish way to go.

do not rush yourself, don't buy the best cubes available, live with the cubes you have now, and learn the basics off them. If you've only had a week of practice, there's no wondering why you've been having memorizing problems, you've only just started... you can't expect to be sub 10 in sub 10 days, it's just unrealistic. If you work hard, and don't get ahead of yourself; or try not too, you'll have a funner, easier time not only cubing, but on this forum as well. Welcome to the forums John :D

p.s. you can still get good cubes, but not the top of the like the lubix elite ones, ya know? maybe get one of the many few old famous cubes, start off with an AV, a Guhong, or an FII, or even a ghosthand (which is very similar to the FII)

Ignore this guy. Read the FAQ. Read the wiki. Buy a Guhong.

Your opinion. As a matter of fact, a cube can be too responsive, causing lockups or overshoots on inexperienced cubers. Sure, they could get used to it, or they could just work their way up to cubes that are more difficult to control. I myself am almost sub-20, and am often screwing up a solve because the sides on my Zhanchi are going everywhere, as I can't keep them under control.

To the OP: May I recommend a Dayan Lunhui? This is by no means a bad cube, and it is very solid and easy to handle, so I think it's a better option than the Zhanchi, which you may find hard to handle. A Guhong might be alright too...if you don't want to get too many cubes though, it won't HURT to just go straight to the Zhanchi.

Using a good cube does not make you worse. This is a fact.

buelercuber: I wanted one of the best cubes because I currently don't have a 3x3, I've been learning the 3x3 and 4x4 methods on my Rubik's Revenge.

Wrong. using a good cube at low level will give you bad habits, nobody had good fingertricks when they first start them so getting and keeping bad fingertricks will not only make you bad but it will limit your ability in the future. Ignore this guy, he's possibly the biggest troll on this forum.

oh i understand what you want lol, but you shouldn't get the best cubes available, try at least to get something less so your development is better. just my observation. people who want to get fast, fast, usually quit earlier, and don't have a fun time cubing.

Lol at the argument that good cubes develop bad fingertricks. Bad cubes make you have wristy turns, and horrible fingertricks. If you really have to, you can just tighten the Zhanchi.

Get the Zhanchi. Enjoy it. Tighten it if needed. Welcome to the forums and happy holidays.

He can be trollish; but I never see Kirjava post bad, or wrong information, unless he is clearly joking towards someone who deserves it. If anything, you should listen to any serious advice he gives you.

Very true. A good explanation for why he SHOULD get used to a good cube now. Sure it's excessively responsive compared to what he's used to, but that will change with practice (probably a lot of it).

I actually used a storebought cube for a year and a half before ordering one of the chinese speedcubes and it took FOREVER for me to get used to the new speed. Sooner can only be better. Just don't get too frustrated, it will be hard at first.

Kirjava is probably the smartest person on this forum (in terms of cube knowledge anyway), he merely chooses to put his wisdom within a veil of sarcasm a lot of the time. Bueler, you should learn how to distinguish what's a troll post. "Kir disagrees with me" != "Kir is trolling again".

I only said he was being a troll because of how he inappropriately disagreed with me; without a proper explanation. just sayin'

I'm probably gonna get a Guhong 3x3, and a Shengshou 5x5

That seems good :D

There is no evidence for this. There is however, evidence that using a bad cube will give you bad habits.

Sorry for the lack of direct explanation that I'm apparently required to post to ensure I'm not seen as a troll these days, but we've been over this issue many times and I'm sick of explaining to people who think they know what they're talking about that they're giving out bad advice.

using a bad cube allows you to adapt and have better habits when ever you do happen to go to a better cube.

link as to your explanation? maybe on another thread?

Using a bad cube allows you to develop terrible habits (because you /can't/ do proper fingertricks at all) which you will have to un-learn when you get a cube that doesn't suck.
