Ok so I'm wondering on people's thoughts on whether a PLL skip is lucky on a 4x4x4. I think that it should be counted as lucky.
But the problem is that although you are saving more time with a PLL skip on a 4x4x4 compared to a 3x3x3 (or at least, I certainly would hope so), proportionally it is much less time within the whole solve.
Just making up some numbers, We'll say for a 12 second 3x3x3 solve, person X has a 1.5 second PLL, while for a 60 second 4x4x4 solve, person X has a 2.5 second PLL.
(1.5/12)*100 = 12.5%
(2.5/60)*100 = 4.17%
So for a PLL skip on a 3x3x3 person X is proportionally saving three times the amount of time than a PLL skip on a 4x4x4.
I'm not sure if anyone would consider the maths to be relevant here but it sets up a general idea for those of use who are so inclined.

So what are people's thoughts on the matter?

Yes, I do think a PLL skip is lucky on a 4x4x4. A bigger dilemma I have is whether getting parity is "unlucky" or not. Is parity part of the solve? Is it not? Is no parity lucky or just regular?

Whatever. Parity just ****es me off.

I would think that parity occurs often enough on the 4x4x4 for it to be considered unlucky, but that's just my opinion.

Ok... well parity has a 50% chance of happening, for both parities. That means, that there's a 25% chance that you won't get parity. I think parities aren't really "lucky" but I consider myself lucky when I don't get them. As for a PLL skip, it really depends on your move count, if you are going by the "official" rules for lucky solves. I would say it is lucky, because getting a PLL skip still saves 2-4s (at least for me), and its not a commonly occurring thing.

I was wondering... would it still be lucky if you got say, OLL parity but an OLL skip after you fix the parity (assuming you do not know the full effects of the parity algo and only found out you had OLL skip after execution), or PLL parity but a PLL skip after you fix the parity (you also don't know that it would be pll skip after doing the algo)?

1) You'd have to be silly not to know even the least bit what your parity algs do.
2) The way you described it, you should ideally arrive at an ignorant equal chance of skip for OLL / PLL. So yes, lucky.

I could not understand that at all.

anyway, PLL skips are lucky if not forced. The end.

Right, but what if you knew you would skip OLL / PLL after doing the parity algo? And what's an 'ignorant equal chance'?

A PLL skip is completely independent from having PLL parity. Therefore they are lucky no matter what. Also, you have a 50% chance of getting each of the types of parity, so there's no luck involved with skipping it.

what about PLL skips on a 5x5? a PLL skip can save me at most 5 seconds, but getting an easy case for my last 3 centers(thats how i do it) can save up to 30 seconds. certainly its still "lucky" in the sense that it doesn't occur very often, but i don't think it should make the entire solve lucky.

for pll skip on a 4x4 but pll parity could count either way. it could not be a PLL skip, but the H permutation and you fix the two that are not effected by parity and swapped.
