Huge blast at Japan nuclear power plant

The explosion was not related to the reactor. It is under control and they are pumping sea water into it. Salt water causes rust so doing this means that the whole reactor will need to be rebuilt.

Wasn't it Hydrogen explosion?
My heart goes out to all in Japan.
I think they are hoping so. The alternative is a steam explosion which suggests a reactor vessel breach.

Anyway its a relief that its not looking like a worst case scenario.

This is really terrible. I'm currently taking a course on alternative energy systems and though nuclear power is (obviously) dangerous, it is also the cheapest. Nuclear power is something the world should be seriously considering due to how quickly we are burning through our fossil fuels. Huge disasters such as this are really big set backs as far as the public opinion on nuclear power is concerned -- holding us back even more from research to make it safer.

As flan said, as horrible as this is hopefully it will not be worst case scenario. My heart goes out to everyone in japan.

Japan is currently releasing information about a third explosion at the nuclear plant. Stay safe, and good luck to all those in Japan.

Similar to what I was thinking. Though, the coal mining industry doesn't seem to falter every time the media reports a mine collapse.

Please don't don't take notice of alarmist newspaper articles full of speculation. Please just listen to the facts of what is happening. There is NO chance of a Chernobyl type disaster and even if there is a total meltdown, it does not mean that any amount of radiative material will be released into the environment.
