How long did it take you?

I'm currently averaging in the mid forties, with a single solve pb (non lucky) of 35.8 seconds. I've been cubing for 2 months, give or take a couple of weeks, so I'm still a newbie QB.

How long did it take you to get under 30 seconds, or further still, under 20? Also, say if you worked it out yourself, that's always interesting.

I got under 30 a few weeks ago (after a fairly intense week or two where I learned how to actually look ahead), and I've been cubing since last June or July.

So ~9 months to get an under 30 average. Keep in mind, though, I haven't spent a lot of time studying algorithms or training intensely, I'm sure you could do it in much less time if you did. I was still doing up to 2 algorithms for eOLL, up to 3 for cOLL, and 1 or 2 for PLL when I was around 30, with purely intuitive F2L.

Yes, I force myself to solve every puzzle I do before I look up how to do it fast. I figure that otherwise when people ask "did you figure out how to do that yourself," I don't have to say "no, I looked it up on the internet." Instead I can say "yes, and then afterwards I looked up how to do it faster on the internet."

My original method was so bad that it still takes me ~7 minutes to solve using it, and about 60%-70% of the time I have to give up and either start over or cheat and use methods I learned later.

I shan't be, I somewhat despise the idea of algorithm cramming, I just wouldn't be able to do that. I'm doing Petrus with about... 6 algorithms, I think? Plus some mirrored ones. I just can't see any fun in remembering over 30 for a few extra seconds.

2 months for sub30, 5 months for sub20, and then I got lazy, never finished learning OLLs, haha. I recommend learning them all in the beginning, so that you don't get lazy later on. 8-9 months for sub 15 because I slowed down on cubing to focus on school, then 2 months break. Cubed since May last year.

took me 3 months to get sub 30, around 25 now but got sub-20 solves within 3 months (best solves that is)

5weeks sub 30 time and average 3 months for sube 20 time and Average all I can tell you is to practice, practice, practice and I see a lot of this 3 look PLL and 4cll all I can say is learn the algorithms don't stop with 3 or 4 or 2 look anything you won't do as well as you think trust me I didn't even stop only for a week for 2 look OLL then I was like ya know Max this isn't working I need to learn all of these so I did and I have FANTASTIC times good luck!

Oh yeah, I still stuck at 1 min+, I have been cubing for about 3-4 months. In detail, it took 3 days to solve the cube about a week to solve it sub 3 and practice almost everyday (I am lazy to practice for about a week or 2). Then, I get sub 2 min and then become 1 min+. now I am learning how to solve 5x5x5 although I solve it already. I use pjk's method to solve 3x3x3. You guys mostly using Fridrich right?

switch already!
Weird thing is that I got 3 min first few days, sudden drop, I was stuck at 1 min for a long time, sudden drop, then sub-30 for a long time. Going by this pattern, when will be my sudden drop to sub15? I think finger turning speed is a big limit at the time. going over 4-6 tps on fastest algs is difficult.

Everyone goes their own pace. I read somewhere that it took macky two years to get to sub15. I don't remember exact dates, but I can tell you I started cubing in February 2006, and my average is around 16 seconds today.
