Hi, I am new to cubing and is currently using Dan Brown's method with a store bought cube (Wal-Mart) using Jig A Loo. My average is 1:30. What method should I learn next and is Jig A Loo a good lube? Also what cube should I get, I plan on getting a new cube from cube4you.com

Jig-A-Loo is one of the best lubes. Don't be afraid to use it, it's highly recommended, unless you can get CRC, of course. But if you are also a fellow canadian, like me, and Jig-A-Loo is all you can get, then use it.

Most people would tell you to learn the Fridrich, or CFOP method. It's more of a highly advanced beginners method. Or beginners method is a really dumbed down fridrich method. It seems you are using the Dan Brown method though, which is different that the beginners method I know. But, I recommend you learn a different method, the Petrus, or Roux method. These require you to think wayyy more than the fridrich method does, and it will be beneficial to you if you learn one of these methods.

I suggest not ordering of Cube4you.com. It is pretty much non-existant to more advanced cubers (Not too sure, so dont flame war me) because we have http://lightake.com/ . Cubes are not the only things they sell, so go to the "Magic cube" section on the left first.

Thanks for the reply, what cube should I get?

The most popular cubes right now would be the A-V and the F-II, but every cuber has a different style, so just because it's the most popular doesn't necessarily mean that it is the best one for you.

For now, almost any DIY will do. That being said, storeboughts are generally stiffer than DIY's, so you might want to get something smooth, yet tight, so that it doesn't overshoot. I personally would get a Diansheng (cheapest price for quality of cube), but I don't know if Lightake sells them.

One more thing - you don't absolutely need a new cube. There are many other things that will improve your time. I switched to a DIY when I averaged around 30-40 seconds.

Just my two cents, hope that helped :)

As somebody else suggested, you don't NEED to switch over to a DIY. Switching over to a DIY will give you a nice 3 second boost, but at your speed, you could achieve that 3 second boost in 1-3 days. I got my first DIY when I was around 40 seconds.

Also, as somebody else suggested, storeboughts are generally stiffer and slower than most DIYs. But, you want something to be perfectly Noob-Proof, just until you gain some more experience. I would suggest the Maru 3x3 beginners cube. Unfortunately, I asked LighTake to stock it, but with no reply :( It is available at http://www.marucube.com Too bad the shipping isn't free. But, the beginners version is very much like a storebought, it has rivets, so you can't adjust the tensions. However, the tensions are set evenly, and with a good balance between speed, and other aspects (Corner cutting, lockup reduction, etc) that make a good cube.

If you can't afford the insane shipping (But I guess you were prepared for it... you wanted to order from C4Y lol), I would go with an F-II (Sheng En), or an AV from speedcubeshop.com or cubingstore.com . These cubes will be pre-assembled, so as long as you don't do anything, you should be absolutely fine.

Note that the Maru Beginners version is different than the Maru DIY and Regular versions.

Edit:
Yeah. Yu Nakajima is crazy fast with storeboughts. Besides, using storeboughts will improve accuracy, which will in turn improve your times, most likely :)

If you're new you wouldn't know that Yu nakajima won worlds 2007 with a store bought.

I was actually going to say something along those lines, but Nakajima is something else. Plus, for beginners, better cubes effect times more greatly than for Nakajima-esque cubers, haha.

That's not the point. the point is that he didn't use the best cube that was available to the public.

Dakota Harris is another good cuber who uses ONLY storeboughts. unfortunaely he quit and only has one cubing video left.

This one.

You should learn the Fridrich method next if you're up to learning more algorithms. Find badmephisto on youtube for the best tutorial.

Jigaloo is an excellent lube. Don't forget to try out CRC HEavy Duty silicone, Lubix, and Maru Lube.

The most common cubes that cubers are using nowadays are the DaYan Guhong, Alpha V/ Haiyan Memory (Alpha V modded), F-II, Ghosthand I and II, DaYan II, and Type Q.

I reccomend you DON'T buy from cube4you. Shipping takes forever. Buy from Speedcubeshop, Speedcubingstore, Cube depot, Popbuying, and Lightake.

In conclusion, I have found that F-II and Alpha-V are the most popular and best choices. Which one is better?

I wasn't arguing your point in any way...I was just saying that although it's possible, it's not the optimal way. After all, if it were, we would all be using storeboughts as mains.
