Stage Fright?

I get nervous too (though I've only been to two competitions). Similar to Dene, I really only get nervous when I want to get a good time. I get nervous at home when I want to get a good time.

I completely agree with qqwref, and I'm not saying that to make you get self-conscious about if we think you are slow/fast. It's honestly the flat out truth. Every competition has that person or people that people expect to win, and they will be watching them. People practice pretty much all day, between solves, between rounds, etc. You'll see people racing each other for fun, doing the 50 cube everybody solves a cube til we're out game, etc.

My best advice: Don't worry a bit about the times you get (unless you are sub15). Focus a lot more on everybody you get to meet because there will be puzzles there you've never played with. There will be people there you think are really cool. There will be cool fun games to play with all the other cubers, etc. The best thing you can do at a competition is not compete, but making all these new friends. All the silly games people do are usually a lot more fun than the times.

I personally want a sub20 average but I am trying to get out of practice all day so I can get good times. It's a lot more fun hanging out with everybody else.

I have never gotten nervous in any of the competitions I've went to so far. I don't get any negative thoughts while cubing. All I know is that I'm doing the best I can do and hopefully do really well.

Aus Nats a few days ago, 3x3 finals each competitor did there solves individually, meaning, you were the only person solving, and the whole crowd was watching you. Btw, this was at a big public venue, that had people on the 2nd 3rd and 4th floors looking down too :s
You'll be fine :)

That's why I don't go to cubing competitions. :p Especially because I get really shaky when nervous and it'd be a total fail to solve the cube in front of many many people while trembling like a leaf. :fp:

I close my eyes, rub my hands together, and take two deeep breaths. I say "ready" right after I take my second deep breath and open my eyes. Kind of weird, but it puts my mind at ease.

Yeah, I find that deep breathing helps. Just try to calm down and focus on your solve, nothing else.

If my hands are sweaty, I'll wipe 'em on my pants so the cube won't feel like its going to slip out of your hands.
For me, the nerves usually go away once I start.
I wipe my hands on my pants too. :)

Everyone pays attention to Westicles and Phillip, no one cares about me.

Everyone pays attention to Faz, no one cares about me. :p
