Hey guys :)

My name is Colin and lately I've been solving my Rubiks cube a lot and I would love to improve my times and share my experiences.

I'm 14 years old and I live in The Netherlands (Limburg, around Heerlen if you want to know). I've been able to solve my Rubiks Cube for like 2 months I think now, but only since 2 days I've been doing it really active. I learned it from Dan Brown on Youtube and I still use his algorithms, but I think I'm going to look into some better algorithms.

My fastest solve on the 3x3x3 is currently 82 seconds and it's the only cube I have. I can also solve the 2x2x2, but I've only done it on the PC and that's of course a whole different experience than with a real cube.

I've tried to record every solve I do with my camera to see my progress and my mistakes I made back than later, but I figured out my camera can only record around 6 videos of 3 minutes on 2 fresh out of the package Duracell Plus AA batteries, the best batteries there are in The Netherlands I think.

I uploaded my previous record (93 seconds) on Youtube and I would love if you guys could give me some tips/tell me something I'm doing wrong or I can improve :) My cube is currently not lubed (aargh I'm sorry :() I don't have any silicone spray at home and a few weeks ago I bought a GPS for geocaching with friends, so now I don't have any money and I'm not sure what my mother is going to say if ask her if I can borrow some money to buy some lubrication >.>

So, I hope I'm going to learn a lot here :)

wow lots of new members lol
welcome :)

I suggest looking at badmephisto's youtube videos to learn a better method for solving the cube...i've never watched them myself but everyone else says they're good ;)

I don't mean to sound critical or rude, but at your speed it's hard to give constructive criticism because everything can use a lot of work. Keep practicing, and if you notice you're having trouble with a particular step, feel free to ask :)

Anyway, welcome!

Hey Welcome Wickex, I live in Holland as well!

Good luck in getting faster! I'm sure you will if you practise enough. Don't worry about the price of the lubricant, cause at the 'Gamma' you can buy some good lube for less then € 5,00.

Welcome, I honestly think that this is the best first post I've seen by anyone under 18! You write well for your age.

On-topic:
You're doing alright for 2 months. :)
I'll predict that you'll see a few "practice" posts coming up shortly, which will be deserved, but apart from practice, try to, in-solve, see how you could do a step better, and try to think a way through it. Don't worry about speed/time so much as efficiency, and the speed will come.

I hope you have a pleasant stay,
statue

Thanks everyone :)

@Ubercuber I'll check out his videos, thanks :)

@Hawkmp4 Indeed and thanks :)

@Yudai85 Is it really that cheap? I'll try to pick some up as soon as possible :)

@Stachuk1992 Thanks :) And yea, I've been doing a mix of slow solving to see if I can improve some moves and of course speed solving. My times are usually around 1.5 to 2 minutes today. Yesterday that was 2.5-3 minutes, so that's a big difference :)

And I noticed I forgot to include my video in the first post. I'll do that now :)

While you're still a beginner you can flex to other methods as you become faster. Our speedsolving wiki, has a nice list of methods for more advanced solving.

As stated, however, don't be so concerned about being fast rather focus on your technique at first.

You're doing very well for the time you've been cubing :) I know it's tough without a lubed cube, but try working on some fingertricks. They should just naturally come to you with enough practice.

Thanks everyone :) And yea, I've been trying to do fingertricks, but it's almost impossible to rotate the D without breaking my finger right now.

I average a little under 20 seconds and I don't finger trick d except in a few algorithms. It's really not that useful. I'm assuming you're using it to orient the corners at the end of the solve. Try it wristing the D turns and Fingertricking the R turns keeping your hands on the D and R faces. It is by far the fastest way to do that.

try to find the thread: how to get faster using the fridrich method if u're using fridrich. And welcome :)

you should lubricate your cube with 2~3 drops of vegetable oil. you should be able to get it from the kitchen. :D It's not that good lube, but it's better than vaseline.

Something that I think would help is after you make the cross, put it on the bottom. Then you can put in the corners using R U R' U'. It's much faster, especially if it's hard for you to do D moves.

welcome!:)
i live in holland too, and actually not that far from you, because i live around Geleen.
keep practicing, and i suggest you to learn 2 look OLL en 2 look PLL, because i was around your average too, and now i'm around 47 seconds.
and i recommend to do Thompson's algorythm, it's much faster...
well, have a nice day!:)

Thanks :)

@Thompson: Thanks for the tip, I'll do that. I've seen a lot of people talking about it being a bad habit to do the cross on the top so it'll be better if I correct that early.

@MrTimCube Thanks, I'll look into that :)

@Khartaras LOL

@hyunchoi98 Thanks for the tip :D I put some olive oil in there and it really makes a big difference! Only problem is my cube isn't waterproof so my cube is really slippery on the outside and I keep having to wipe it clean but I hope all the excessive oil will get out soon.
