Changing from LBL to blockbuilding

Theres that big fight over Petrus/Fridrich, they are different and the transition between them may not be so smooth for many people. No doubt that Petrus is more efficient, Fridrich is "easier" though. After the LBL beginners method, Fridrich is a simpler transition because of the way it builds on it. So this means that many people do Fridrich. Fridrich was my first method after beginners, and I got it down to sub30. Then I started learning Petrus. I hated it, as do many when they first learn it, but I immediately saw its benefits and gave it a chance. I started doing a Fridrich/Petrus F2L mix and then found ZZ and that is my preferred method of doing F2L now.

What I want to start is a discussion about the transition from a layer by layer method to blockbuilding (or even vice versa if you did that). What where your thoughts on blockbuilding at first, what did you like/hate about it? What do you recommend/not recommend to people trying to switch? Have you tried blockbuilding and decided to stick with LBL? Or if you do not want to give blockbuilding a chance and why? Or just anything related too this.

It's a shame that this is how people perceive it.

...

I think it's silly to assume people dislike petrus when they first learn it. As crazy as it may sound, there are some people who learn it first!

...

F2L is fun. Blockbuilding is fun. I do both.

Well, I like many people learned how to cube with LBL. Before I started 4LLL or F2L, I went to a Corners First method, probably the best choice I've made when it comes to cubing.

From there, Roux just seemed natural, and I'm only starting to really blockbuild now. At first, I thought it was pointless to put pieces together in blocks when you can just solve 1 at a time, but now I very much enjoy it. :)

I taught someone Corners First instead of the standard Layer By Layer to see how they would progress. They know very few algorithms, and wouldn't even be able to solve a cube using LBL, but the have a pretty decent understanding of how the cube works because they are transitioning to Roux right now.

Roux method <3

Honestly I don't regret learning block building methods even though I was hard at first. I love that you can make the blocks your own way and there was no set method in making blocks, but it was for this reason that I hated block building methods at first. But I feel like I know the cube more when block building as if I know how pieces move when I do something.

I didn't like CFOP or LBL type methods. I was often intimidated by the number of algs. That's why I used Roux, you need like 2-9 algs to be sub-15 (<3 Kir) But after a while, algs weren't much of a big deal. After learning full CMLL for Roux, I just learned full OLL/PLL for the hell of it.

Okay you are right, it is not really a fight or "war" type scenario. There are some people though that are "fanboys" lets say, of either method. I have a friend who does not like Petrus, he doesnt even want to pay attention when i try to explain part of it, which is sad i think. Many other people are like this, petrus solvers hating Fridrich, or fridrich solvers hating petrus. I find it stupid. both methods should be given a chance before you decide what you like. Learning petrus was something that was insanely helpful for me even though i did not like it at first.

I said people dislike blockbuilding at first because it is not the smoothest of transition. I didnt like it and many people dont either because they are used to the cross and slot based method. It is a different method, so it can be difficult. I know many learn petrus first, i was saying that most do Fridrich, which is true.

And yes i find both F2L and blockbuilding fun. Im not siding with either method, both have benifits. At the end of it all its what feels better for you. I like giving many methods a try just to see what they are like, and what works for me is more of a mix of both.

yea i felt it was pointless too, but once you get it it is so nice.

I use fridrich for "speed'' but also do quite a lot of corners first solving now.
This after talking with Lars Andersson at the Belgian open.

When he set up the cube with just a few moves I basically had to start from scratch to rebuild it. I thought this was quite silly so I decided to study more methods to get to a better understanding of the cube.

I didn't check the russian "edges first" video yet that was posted a few days ago but will definately look into that as well.
I like the intuitive aspect of these methods.

Yes, it takes time away from practicing fridrich style solving to become fast but I have a lot of fun dong it. And that's what counts!

Block building IS efficient, but the logic involved to do it well is, in my opinion, difficult to master for speed solving. CFOP takes more moves but is easier for speed, and used for speed solving more than Petrus. For FM, however, block building is obviously better. I blockbuild for FM.
