I'm sure this has been thought of before. However I have personally never seen it anywhere. I was experimenting with my 2x2 and was doing some ortega solves. After a few solves, I thought it would be interesting if there would be a way to permute the first face and orient the last layer. Basically a combination of EG and Ortega. As previously stated, I have a feeling that people have thought of this but I am not sure why it hasn't been shown anywhere. The idea is this. Make a layer as you normally would in Ortega. Then use an algorithm to permute the bottom layer and orient the top layer. Then do a PLL. This might be slower than ortega. It definitely is not as fast as EG. But it can be used as a stepping stone between ortega and EG.

This method would have no advantage over Ortega. There would be more algs to learn(since you can't use OLL's you already know), and I would suspect more total moves since you are forced into a PLL (worst cases for Ortega in my opinion).

Maybe it would be useful to learn a couple for the purpose of messing up a fully permuted layer, instead of solving it. Sometimes with Ortega the easiest first layer solution is a fully permuted layer and I curse because I know I'll have to do a J or Y perm, which as others have already said are really slow.

I guess the smartest thing to do would be to learn the easiest bar EG case for each OLL. I think this would be better than using a diagonal case because if the LL is solved then J perm on bottom is still much better than Y perm on bottom, and the double bar case is really fast and the most common.

Of course, this is still not as good as CLL but learning an additional 7 algorithms for a strange optimization of Ortega might still appeal to some more than learning 33 more for CLL. Plus you can still solve the bottom layer without concern for permutation.

What do you guys think? This just came to mind will reading so I might have overlooked something.

Sounds like a pretty good idea. I would probably go for something to turn a solved bottom layer into a diagonal (Y-perm) bottom layer. The reason is that it is fully symmetrical so no D rotation will be needed in PBL and the double diagonal, or diagonal with bar are probably the best PBL cases :)

Hmm... yea I didn't think about having to adjust the D face afterward. I guess the pros of getting the single bar and nobar case outweigh the cons of an occasional Y perm on bottom.
