Are there set variables that people use when showing algorithms?

In this post I was trying to express to the reader to use intuitive set up moves that may change depending on the case at that part of the algorithm, but didn't do so well.

When I ran into these cases when I still used CFOP, I just used variations of the beginners method algorithm (R U R' U') F' U' F. I'd use (R U R' U') T w F' U' F.

Excuse my horrid variables.

Is there a set way to do this? If not, we should probably discuss it in this thread, for I have come across this multiple times while trying to post.

Whats T and w, the variables?

Yah, all I could think of was T, to symbolize turn, & w, since it's before x.

@4Chan: What do you use?
