So I'm using the Oka-style method for pyraminx and after I have solved the first 2 edges and oriented/solved the centers, I need to insert the 3rd edge on the L face. Sometimes the edge is in place and flipped however, and I'm wondering if there's a better algorithm than (L R' L' R) (U' R U R') since it doesn't matter how it will affect the last 3 edges.

Thanks in advance,
Rob

Learn WO :p

and the 2 flip alg isn't bad, I can sub-0.75 on it

Actually I would imagine Odder can avoid those every time. That's what I do at least...

I'm sure he can as well, but if it goes to that case very easily he just does 2flip and LL.

Alright, yeah, I suppose that's what I used to do. I also always flip an edge that's oriented correctly so that I'll end up with an easy 4-move case. The only exception is if there's only one more edge to be flipped, in which case a 2-flip will solve the puzzle.

+1 for both =)

+1 =D just that the 2-flip can be done sub-0.75 from 3 different angles and the fastest of them is sub0.6 (and 0.5 on a really good day :P)

Can someone give me an example solve or walk me through your thought process when trying to avoid this? How far ahead are you thinking to prevent the edge from being flipped in place?

You can learn one-look (flip + LL) if you want - there's only 12 possible cases, of which two are 2flip. That's probably the fastest approach.

Isn't that just a subset of L4E then?

give me a scramble... xD

Well to answer your second question, I usually see the entire solve minus the last step during inspection.

Oh, okay. I guess I just need to practice more and eventually I'll be able to trace that piece through the orientation of centers.

Can you link me to the algorithms? I was thinking of doing this before and you've convinced me. :D I'll probably try to find some myself but if you have them that would be preferable.

Algs are listed here, but I haven't bothered to optimize them for wristtrickiness or whatever (they're just move-optimal).

Alright, thanks :)

use Ksolver to find different optimal cases... because som optimal algs are much better than other optimal algs ;D

Isn't he doing that!??? I thought it was human nature to do that :P

EDIT: double post-.-'
