I don't think that I am understanding what is meant when people say 'non-lucky solve'. Is it simply referring to a solve where a step is skipped, like going from yellow cross to OLL and having everything permuted?

I can't really think of anything else it would mean... but maybe it's because I a nubiekins. I had an official scamble (from WCA site) where all 4 corners lined themselves up after solving my cross. Not all at once... but as I dropped in red/green, it lined up orange/blue... is that considered 'lucky'?

Thanks for helping the n00b

going from cross to oll is like, 1/10000000 chance. Lucky is considered skipping a step, most likely oll or pll. your situation with your corners is just considered an easy solve i guess.

I've had that happen a few times, actually.

Something that is REALLY unlikely, is having the F2L finish the whole cube. That has happened to me TWICE! Both using official scrambles. One on a 3x3x3, the other when doing the final solve on the 5x5x5. I was stunned both times.

Also the more steps you have the more likely you are to skip a step and get a lucky solve...
The other day out of about 20 solves (not timed just messing around all legit scrambles tho) I had 5 PLL skips and 2 LL skips now thats lucky.

wow crazy luck. 5 times u got the 1/72 PLL skpi and twice the 1/15552 LL skip!

Well, if you know what the word "lucky" means in the real world, it should come pretty easy. And when we use the word lucky before the word solve, then I can't imagine that people can think of anything else then what it is...

Skipping any step in your solving method is considered lucky, UNLESS:
1. You worked toward it (such as anticipating the next step
2. The chance of skipping that step is 20% or greater
3. The skipped step is less than 3% of your entire method

(this is all according to the UWR)

I was refering to 'yellow cross' which would be my second step for OLL [F2L, yellow cross (while I learn more OLL singles), OLL, PLL (still memorizing the 21... I'm at 11 and counting)]. I guess I should have been more specific... I was bascially refering to skipping the PLL.

I have had it happen a few times, but only once from a 'real' scramble, where going from 'lions head/fish' to OLL finished the cube

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I remembered something specific... but I couldn't remember what it was (the 20% thing).
