I just saw this video of nakaji's pll attack
and he used a storebought cube! Now how does he do that!
And here's another lame ?
how do u get the cube to be nice and loose
I do have a cube that;s loose but can't cut corners well
I guess i'll dip it in sand :)

It's not really the cube, it's the cuber, every single move made by Nakaji is precise.

Well, I now unofficially can average sub-20 using my store bought cube :p . DIY's are for those too lazy to work in a store bought cube, and too rich to care about the cost :p . Store bought cubes are definitely better once they get nice and loose, they last much longer and pop much less often.

I disagree with every statement in that post.

First statement: True, definitely, I got a sub-20 average of 12 for the first time a couple of days ago, and I have never touched, nor even seen a DIY cube, ever.

Second statement: My bit of fun, make what you want of it :) .

Third statement: I think this doesn't need proving. Almost everyone agrees that store bought cubes last longer than DIY cubes (as far as I've seen, at least?). And, I think Mr. Nakajime is proof that they are very effecient once they get nice and loose, definitely as efficient as a DIY cube, thus better overall, as they have the longer life as well as the efficiency.

I've gotta stand with Dene on this one. I have a couple of store bought cubes that are very nice - at least as nice as my DIY's, maybe even nicer.

Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of consistency in store bought cubes - you can't expect one to be exactly like another. My personal opinion is that Hasbro cubes are a little smoother than Winning Moves cubes, put that is a subjective point of view.

The biggest drawback to store bought cubes is that they aren't adjustable, although they do loosen over time, and they do respond well to silicone lubrication.

I disagree with Dene about the lazy part, but I'm sure he was kidding. Actually, a DIY takes a bit more effort because you've got to put it together yourself.

The biggest advantage to a DIY is that you can adjust the tension. However, the cube is only as good as the person who assembed it. I've never had a store bought cube with uneven tension (i.e., one face looser than the others). Nor have I ever had a store bought cube that popped all the time (at least when it was new). Both are distinct possibilities with a DIY that isn't put together properly.

At the end of the day it doesn't really make a whole lot of difference. It's not the cube; it's the cuber.

Dene, what would you do if one face of your store bought cube was very loose?Buy another store cube, eh? :)

Lol, well yes I wouldn't have a choice as buying online isn't as easy for me (no credit card, no accessible alternative). But I haven't this problem. I have two store bought cubes. One is in absolutely brilliant condition, the other is getting there.

Actually, my "laziness" jibe was at the period of time it takes to break in a store bought cube, whereas DIY cubes are good to go from the start, of course, it was definitely a joke :)

Sorry about the first statement. :P

I don't agree that store bought cubes last longer. I've been using this DIY longer than you probably have been cubing. If a DIY gets too loose, tighten it. You can't do the same for a store-bought cube.

Perhaps, but have you been speedcubing with it as much? As far as I'm aware the "top" cubers go through their DIY's in a matter of months. I have had my cube for 5+ years now...

Dene... i've had my main DIY ever since I started cubing, even before I got serious with fridrich. That's about 2 years now. Other than my white Rubiks DIY that got stolen, I haven't found a cube I liked better since. Most of the "top" cubers do like to try out cubes. I think Harris just experiments to find a cube that he likes the best.

Its possible to get sub-20 average with store bought cubes. I personally have gotten a sub-19 average with my store-bought cube. Corwin Shiu averages sub-18 with store bought cubes I believe.
