X-Cross, Multislotting, Full OLL/PLL, cubemodding neccesary to get sub-20?

my friend Eric Limeback uses pure fridrich and he averages around 11.2, so those advanced techniques like multislotting and xcross are not that essential, but it's always good to know more.

How come nobody has answered about cube modding? I would like to know the answer as well...

Yeah all of these stuffs help you getting sub-20 faster but the most common way is to practice, a lot. So my general answer is: No. You can become sub-20 without any of those, in my opinion.

Is it just me or are these topics (no offence to Akuma) getting more and more far in time limits. I mean in a short time we will have such threads as: How to become sub-2 minutes FASTER????

I remember dealing with these barriers, I was impatient too but suddenly it just happens...

Get a fast cube when you are awesome sub 20 with your storebought.

I agree to stick with your cube untill you get faster, but if you want, of course you can buy a new cube anytime, it's totally up to you. Just try not to blame the cube for the bad times.

Imagine what Feliks (or basically any top 3x3x3 cuber) would average with that crappy cube! ;)

No one ever knows what they're talking about when they use the word "multislotting."

Multislotting: This is an even more extreme case, moreso then X-cross, meaning, if you want sub-15, this will be very helpful, but again, not necessary for sub-20.
Chris, you appear to be pretty knowledgeable. Name me three people who actively use multislotting.

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not, but I stand by my opinion that multislotting will help being sub-15. Is it necessary for sub-15? Of course not, but it will help.

Why would you need me to name 3 people who use it?

Because there AREN'T 3 people who use it. Knowing 1 or 2 cases and using them one out of every 20 solves doesn't count as using multislotting. Most of the time, any "multislotting" people use is just regular f2l with obvious cancellations.

Ima use multislotting all the time :(

at least, multislotting according to this definition:

What is multislotting?...Basically multislotting is just a state of mind, where you don't dumbly solve the F2L pairs but try to do the smartest solve you can. It is based on the fact that there are many different ways to insert a prepared pair, and every of these different ways affect pieces differently. Working on multislotting will allow you to influence your next pair when pairing one. Sometimes cases are so fair that you can prepare your next pair while inserting one. And happily those cases happen very often when you work for it.
anyway, yeah, next to nothing is necessary for sub 20 other than practice. Sub 20 is actually quite slow.

edit: (sub 20 as in not sub 18 or 15, I know sub 10 is also sub 20 ;))

I was just about to make this thread. I see people who aren't even sub 40 with DIY cubes with certain types of lube that know all the plls and are working on the olls, and here I sit with a sub-30 average with a store bought with random lube and a 2 look oll and a 2 look pll. Seriously, F2l is the most important part of the solve, work on your look ahead, and your times will go down regardless of random techniques and such. You don't need to do all this just to get sub-20 people. Much less sub-40.

He got an 8 at competition (unofficial) with a storebought.

Who says storeboughts are crap?

I'm stuck in the low 20s, so I'll let you know what I've gone through.

I have been a theorist, which is plainly visible from my ZBLL document. I learned full PLL before completing 4LLL. I decided to go the path of ZB, and learned COLL (slowly) and VHF2L (even more slowly). At about 35 seconds I had finished 3LLL. At about 30 seconds I got my first can of Jig-a-Loo. This dropped my times 2 seconds instantly. I became more and more serious about getting faster, and learned full OLL in a week. However, sticking to my ZB goal, I started working on that document. Devoting cubing time and thought to learning algorithms rather than practicing, my times have not improved significantly in the past 6 months. I now average 23-24 seconds and have complete VHF2L mastered, as well as 32 tricky cases. I have know COLL for a long time. I recently learned how to X-Cross, but the time difference is, truly, negligible. So here are the stats I expect when I cross the 20 second line:

Full Fridrich done. This is not necessary for insanely fast people but as you cross it really helps.

Full VH done. This is basically just tricks to make the solve easier.

X-Crossing mastered. But remember it is not a good option on many solves.

Color neutrality. I'm convinced I'm faster because I can use the best of the 6 cross situations. However, I have to decide quickly whether an X-Cross is viable.

So basically you just have to stick with your method, learn a trick or two here and there, and get a lubricant. If your cubing career has been dominated by the need for speed, this should come easily. For those of us fascinated by cube theory, it becomes more difficult.

Just think about it. If you solve f2l in 13 seconds for example, you have 7 seconds for OLL/PLL. It's all about f2l.

About the cube, you don't need a good cube. You just need a decent cube. My first cube (rubik's storebought) is so bad I can barely sub20 last layer (and I know full OLL/PLL). That's the worst cube I ever solved (by far) though. Any other cube it's a minor difference.

I can average sub20 with LBL - no F2L, no OLL, no PLL, no xcross, no multislot. I don't even really lookahead ^_^. I can do this on a Rubiks brand.

x-cross: NO
multislotting: NO
full OLL: NO
full PLL: YES
good cube: NO

i'm about 15, and I know like 20 OLL, full PLL and my F2L is about 10

Grr... I'm about 21-22 and I know like 35 OLL, full PLL and my f2l is about 11. Your last layer is so much faster. I really need to stop procrastinating, and learn some better algs for pll. I should be like, 16 or 17.

On-topic, ^^^ that's easy for you because you are way under sub 20 without this. To get consistently sub 20, is what he wants. Sure you could with simple lbl, and so can a few others, but it's easier to get sub 20 if he learns full PLL. or you could just use petrus....., nah full pll is neccessary.

That sums it up Kirjava. Maybe full OLL is unnessesary.

I'm actually not. I don't even know PLL. Using F2L slows me down.
