<condescending yet gruff movie trailer voice, "O Fortuna" crescendos in background>
Before the WCA... before Stackmats... and 15 years before Jessica Fridrich published her famous speedsolving method, there was the 1982 Budapest Rubik's Cube World Championship. The pioneers of speedsolving that gathered here didn't have YouTube, they didn't have speedsolving.com, they didn't even have the luxury of using their own cubes. In fact, at the time there wasn't a standard color scheme.
Not only that, but during a solve the announcer droned on about the solver's life story. It's a good thing BLD hadn't been attempted yet. (edit: John White had demonstrated a BLD solve in 1981)
While seeping in this epic testament to speedsolving history, you may notice a few familiar names. Can you guess who represented Sweden? If you take a look at the leader-board, you might be surprised to see who represented Czechoslovakia (TCH). Erno Rubik himself sat at the Judges table just as he did two years ago.
Now is your chance to sit back, watch, and be steeped in your history.
</movie trailer voice, hopefully you read it slowly enough that you got the good part of O Fortuna>
