how do you tell the difference between the two A perms?

I look for a 2x2x1 block, and I place it in the top left corner.

If there are 2 non matching corners in the F face, then it is the clockwise perm

If there are 2 matching corners in the f face, then it is the counterclockwise perm.

Just practice, you'll get it eventually. There's no fast way to becoming fast (literally)

I put the bar at the front (facing you) look at the edge on the right and knowing the colour scheme determine whether it needs to go clockwise or conter-clockwise.

For A perm, I look at the 1x2x2 V-shape thingy and compare to the side with 2 same stickers on corner blocks and go from there. I seldom mess up A perm but my execution is crappy. It is 1 of my most hated (though not slowest) algorithms in terms of comfort level. I can do it from all angles but that is because all angles are equally slow.

For U perm, it is the easiest man. I put the side with same colors at the back (not sure is that the bar), then look at the RU sticker to determine whether it needs to go front or not. If yes, it is 1 U perm. If no, it is the other. But I use RU algorithm so this is the best position for me.

There are people who can look at any 2 sides and know which U perm to do. I am too lazy to learn that :fp.

ok thanks. but im not sure if this new question is off topic or not, because its regarding the A perm. when you have no sides with two of the same colour (after OLL) do you use A perm two times or E perm? because im still using a little bit of beginner method, and RobH0621 says to use A perm twice but badmephisto says to use E perm.

It solves both ways, so do whichever way you're comfortable with. I started off with learning the A perm and can do it relatively fast, while I haven't practiced E at all and it takes ages to execute. Practice is all it takes.

And I suggest learning a few of the no-headlights PLL's like Y and V once you've got the initial 2-look algorithms memo'd. Don't try the N-perms too early though since they'll come up very rarely.

E-Perm feels great and is very fast... but for one-handed I still have to do 2x A-Perm :)

EDIT: For U-Perm recognition I put the bar to the back and look at the left edge - if it wants to go to the front I think "good - I can use my fast U-Perm (CCW)" :D If not I just do the other.

On a side note, may I ask which algorithm you use for E? I have real trouble with it

lU'R'DRUR'u2'R'URDRU'R

Start with the left hand performing the l move with thumb on U, middle finger on D. Immediately U' with left index finger, R' with right hand, immediately D with left ring finger. RUR' trigger with right. u2 or u2' with either hand then R'UR with right. Another D with left ring finger and finish off with RU'R on right.

EDIT: found a good reference for it on Bob Burton's PLL page with a couple of videos:

Oh, that is magic. I used the same one with x' R in the beginning instead of l, but now it makes much more sense. Before I'd have memorized the sequence in groups since it's easily divided in to 4 parts, but now I can just do it by muscle memory. Thanks for this.

And to get back on topic, I recognize A perm by first seeing the 2x2x1 block and then looking at the colour of the corners on both sides of it. If it's A, they'll be the same colour, and if they're different it's a V. Then if it's an A I look at which side I have my headlights to see which one.

And for the U, I see the full bar and look which edge needs to go all the way across, then I have to draw their cycle with my finger to easier realise if it's clockwise or counterclockwise.

Badmephisto made a great video that'll help you recognize the PLL's. Just watch it and try using the tips to recognize the PLL's you know and you'll get much faster at recognition.
