Why don't advanced cubers use their full inspection time?

Well, with Roux it took me usually less than 2 seconds to find the 1x1x3. With ZZ it takes a lot more time, counting out the bad edges, remembering how that number is solved, thinking of the moves, and then looking for the line pieces. I have never got to the last part in a solve yet.

I am bad at memorising too many moves in inspection. I tried to remember where a F2L pair and a lot of times I mess up and it didn't turn out where I expected them to be, and it screwed the whole solve :fp. Cross is crucial, if I screw it up I screw up everything.

X-cross (actually solving a pair) is next to impossible. I don't have Petrus training and is weak in that stuff.

Also, I find that rushing through cross fast is not always the most important or even good for me, it may hurt the cross to F2L transition. So now I prefer to form cross and lookahead to F2L during forming cross and not during inspection.

I almost always go over with zz because I'm not used to it.

I'm not sure I get what you're saying.

Laziness, mostly.

Also, for me (and probably some other people), forcing myself to look for an xcross is possible but often ends up wasting time. The larger number of moves to remember means that I am more likely to mess up, and also that I am less likely to be able to do it in a braindead enough way to be able to lookahead to whatever is next. Even if I sometimes can plan an extended cross in the 15 seconds, it won't actually help my solves unless it is very short.

dont plan out your moves when doing something like x-cross thats just stupid, what you do is you see where the pieces are that you need to make it. then you start the solve and make it.... its hard to explain but when you use a blockbuilding method you dont plan out your first steps (i could be horribly wrong) you see where the pieces are and then just... do it

he almost alwyas goes over the 15 seconds allotted

Well... would you count sub 18 as fast? -.-

For me (CFOP user btw), I can normally see the cross and reasonable pieces I can preserve/turn into an x-cross in 2-4 (maybe 6 for like X-crosses and stuff) seconds. There's really no need to use up the whole time when you can see everything before the 15 seconds is up.

For blockbuilding, I see why you'd use up the whole 15 seconds.

Not that I'm terribly fast, but this is my thought process when I'm inspecting: Figure out the best way to solve the cross. If the cross is simple I'll take a glance to see if I can gain some insight about the first pair, but that's all. If it doesn't smack me in the face I'm done inspecting. I imagine I rarely use more than 5-8 seconds.
