[Unofficial] Isaac Wappes-Blindfolded Rubik's Cube Solve-3:31.77

Just use:
[you-tube]ID[/you-tube]

And replace ID with 5wFdlrjnhg4&
And remove the '-' between you and tube (sorry, I couldn't figure a better way of showing it!)

I dislike calling some people pro, to me there are no pro's at speedcubing.

For help, you need to say which method you are using to memorise the cube?

Just use the "noparse" code:

[noparse]
[/noparse]
[noparse][noparse]
[/noparse][/noparse]

And Arnaud, "professional" doesn't necessarily require a job or income.

I disagree. professional comes from profession which means job. http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/professional
I know it comes from profession. I can't believe you didn't bother actually clicking on that word and reading this:

1: the act of taking the vows of a religious community
2: an act of openly declaring or publicly claiming a belief, faith, or opinion : protestation
3: an avowed religious faith
4 a: a calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation b: a principal calling, vocation, or employment c: the whole body of persons engaged in a calling

This, to me, doesn't look just like "job". Employment is only a part of a part of item 4. I say there are professional cubers in the 4a meaning (and maybe also the other item 4 meanings)

I didn't click on profession. I only knew it to mean "employment" and "something religious". I don't agree with you that cubing is a calling, but that might just be because I associate calling with words like "religion" and "destiny".

Before we start debating this, can you tell me who you think is a professional cuber?

Ron, Matyas, Erik, me (not saying this list is complete).

For me, it has something to do with quality, expertise, and dedication. Excerpts from Wikipedia's Professional amateurs article showing the meaning I mean:

- It is probably most recognizable in the field of sports, where those who play at highly competitive or skilled level, but are not paid, are often called Pro-Ams.

- Pro-Ams occur in populations that have more leisure time and live longer, allowing the pursuit of hobbies and interests at a professional level.

- Pro-Ams - people pursuing amateur activities to professional standards - ...

I very much agree with the Pro-Ams meaning, but not with the "professional" meaning we discussed before. Ron, Mátyás, Erik and you are not cube-professionals in my opinion.

Pro-Ams is short for "professional amateurs". Which I think we are. And in our case, professional cubers.

Edit: Wait, why are we discussing something like this, while Matyas and Erik and Yu are practicing and becoming even better cubers? Also, is it 3:14am for you, too? Good night now...

I agree in that it is not right to call someone a professional cuber - in my opinion, you would have to make a living off it to be called professional. This could be done (eg, host a tv show about the cube or something, you could have Mr. Kuti as a guest star!!)

Wow. I didn't mean to create such a discussion over one word. Sorry, by "pro", I basically meant anyone who can give me pointers. And I should have included the fact that I use the 3 cycle method.

A little thought and a German lesson...

Like the wikipedia article said, the world is changing, and with it the meaning of words. Nowadays people have the luxury of having plenty of leisure time for hobbies. Not all expert car mechanics do it as a job. Plenty just do it as hobby. I think in earlier times, professional meant that you did what you did for a living, and people who didn't do it for a living just weren't as good. Today that's not the case anymore, and the word professional is (at least) often meant as "high quality", independent of whether it's done for a living.

German usages:

- "Ein Professioneller" (a professional) is something nobody would say. Instead the short form "ein Profi" is used and refers to someone who's doing high quality stuff and knows what he's doing.

- "Eine Professionelle" (female version) usually means prostitute.

- "Amateur" is most often used as insult, meaning something like newbie or loser.
