has anybody had a time where they were getting horrible solves, then all of a sudden they were breaking pb's. for example, i was getting 40 second solves a couple of days ago, i was jsut tottaly off. the next day was getting 29 second averages, and a lucky pb of about 23 seconds. ive beed fast ever since. has this happend to anybody

I took a week or two off cubing recently and when I returned I was suddenly a lot better.

It reminds me of a day in the mid 1990's. One day, I was able to tie my shoe laces just like magic, something that had illuded me since birth.

We know more about the Moon and Mars than our own brain.

Yup - just happened to me... I was struggling to get sub-20 for a while. I mean, I hit it here and there, but not consistently.

Now, I think my slowest cold-solve is around 23 seconds but on average my solves are around 18-19 seconds quite consistently. The only thing that happened was that I practiced for like 2 weeks straight and stopped for a couple of days.

I still have to go back and finish learning COLL, but those were the only things I was doing before pausing for a few days.

:)

That happened to me a few years ago for the 4x4, started on a plane flight and continued though the day. As I recall I dropped 40s-1min off my average. I didn't think too much of it at the time because I still wasn't very fast. ~2m

I dropped 30 seconds off my 5x5 last fall, and started to get sub-3m times, now I'm at 2:20.

Then in the Aurora Summer Open I dropped 30 seconds off the 5x5 and got an official 1:56 average (with best of 1:44.41). I've never been able to get close to that again.

Weird things happen sometimes in cubing.

Wow, I hope this happens to me. I just fractured my left ring finger (which is essential for Roux) and can't cube for 3-4 weeks. I hope that when I do start again I'll be faster than I was before, hopefully sub-20.

Yeah that happenned to me a while back on 4x4. I had never broken sub 1:50. And one day I sat down to do a few solves and got a 1:45 average of 5 and a 1:41.xx single time. I don't know what did it but I've been averaging around 1:50 ever since.

I was stuck at 31-33 seconds for weeks. Then I learned about looking ahead in F2L and my times instantly dropped :D

that happens to me sometimes, but it doesnt stay like that.

when my average was around mid-high 20's (it still is) my goal was to break 20 (single solve). one day i just randomly hit 19's and 18's on a few solves, but the next day i was back at 27.

more recently, i went on vacation to canada. it was a long drive there and back, so i cubed half the time, on both trips, and now i dropped 2 or 3 seconds for good. :D

It happens all the time. I am not very fast like 40+ average but I am taking my time learning new algorithms so I know my time will be slower than even my normal as I am still thinking about the steps.

When the steps become more familiar and I stop thinking about them and occasionally tried to do more quickly I suddenly do a few 30+ in a row.

Fridrich is right you need to do it slowly when you are learning algorithms. Try to improve your algorithms and only when you have optimised it then you work on speed.

The longer you stick to what you are already using and not trying new things, the more difficult it is to break that habit which may not be good. Like I am forcing myself to do cross at the bottom (after doing cross at the top for the longest time) and to recognise some shortcut moves which I find so difficult to do before. Now I can do cross at the bottom much readily and recognising situations more easily than before. It comes with practice.

That's really the only way I've ever improved. I'll get frustrated with having the same times for about a month and suddenly drop about 20% off of my average. It's very rewarding.

recently, i done 150 slow solves.. i focused on looking ahead and thinking of better pair to solve...
and after resting for 1 day.. i improved 2seconds faster in normal solves...

well, i still dont know if i will be back to 19seconds average later.. :D

yeah it has happened to me a few months ago i was doing like 30-40 times but the next day i was getting 20 second times and now ive been getting those ever since and sometimes i get lucky and get a sub-20 solve

I'm hoping I'll have one of these breakthroughs soon. It happened when I was around the 30 second mark.

I've been hovering around the 19-20 second mark for a while, but never really considered myself consistent sub-20. It's been a long while now :(

this happens all the time a few days i was avging 4:30 on 6x6 and suddenly i way avging 4:10 with several sub 4 solves
same thing on 7x7 it went from 7 minutes to 6:30 and a sub 6 single
