So I've had a normal type D as my main cube for several months, and have decided to put in an A core, since that seems like it would make it a better cube. I ordered the A core plus A screws/springs/washers (which I'm supposing are supposed to go with the core?). I got my order today and of course went right to switching out the D core/screws/springs/washers. So my first question is: is that how I'm supposed to do it, or just use the A core with the D scews?

Here is the guide I used for arranging the springs and washers on the screws: http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7242

After a little while of assembly I tried it out on a pretty tight tension (I thought). It had a strange feel. Each side turned very hard at first, but then mid-quarter turn (when none of the corners match up), it turned very easily, but then at the end of the quarter turn, it turned very slowly.

I figured it was the dry lube I had used (CRC silicone heavy duty), so I wiped it off and lubed it with wet lube (100% silicone), which always seems to work well. But only after that, and a lot of loosening, it turned loose enough to turn with my fingers. However, it continues to have that strange feel I described earlier. What's happening here? I've tried just about everything.

You're supposed to use everything Type D, with Type A core. Even so, the hybrid is not much different from an un-modded Type D. The cube still lacks adequate corner-cutting ability.

Not 100% i agree with you there. All the D/A hybrids I've ever had have been pretty remarkable. Take out the D corners and edges, replace them with C cubies, and you have a beast. This is what I'm using now, and every single cube I try after using this hybrid feels inadequate...
