It was a silly competition organized by a team of people who didn't even know (and didn't bother to find out) that a Rubik's cube is called a Rubik's cube  They called it the "Magic Cube Challenge" or something like that, don't really remember :p
  • All cubes were randomly hand scrambled.
  • No average/mean was taken.
  • Single solves were used to determine the winners.
  • Everyone had only ONE attempt.
  • If you pop, you get unlimited retries until you DON'T pop.
  • All results were hand-timed using digital stopwatches (accurate to 0.01s).
  • But all results were only recorded to the nearest second.
  • One timekeeper had to attend to two competitors.
  • Competitors were allowed to hold the cube before the timers started.
  • Need I say more?
  • Oh yeah, the most ridiculous thing was that after all this, the winners got trophies that are more than two feet high :p Some budget they've got!
Fortunately, the top three winners are all on speedsolving.com :D amostay2004, mazei, and me :) Amos is the guy in pink with the cool hair, Mazei is the tall guy in red with glasses, I'm the guy in white with terrible acne :p

Oh well. It was fun :) Hope we get an official competition around here soon (with FMC!) :D

They just simply had no knowledge whatsoever on the existence of WCA or how big cubing can really be...

And btw, I have cool hair??? I just got a haircut and I look like a kiddo! :p

And those trophies are just cheap plastic..doesn't cost much

Good video with nice narration.
I'll tell Andy (cameraman and video editor) he got a praise from THE Stefan Pochmann without even being on this forum :) Seriously, how many people get that?! ;)

That aside, I guess an UNofficial competition is what it takes to get more girls to participate :) I don't have the list of competitors or anything, but if my memory doesn't fail me, I'd say the guy:girl ratio was 7:3, or maybe even 6:4, which I believe is rare in WCA competitions...

Better be after me or Baian get the AsR. ;) And I better get an attempt soon. I might be slightly better than you now because I have over a year of experience, but suspect that you will get better than me quite soon (because I haven't learned anything for FMC for a while and you are improving rapidly).

blah, you forgot the fact that they totally neglected +2 rules. Both of us had +2 penalties but didn't get it.

Andy needs to update his GPS. We got lost trying to go to a train station.

No no no, you got it all mixed up! You two better make sure you DNF all your attempts until after I get the AsR :p I'm sure either one of you can easily raise the bar by a mile without even trying :) And I suspect you haven't been following my forum competition results: 29, 34, DNF, 37, 37. I don't know what you call that in your part of the world, but where I come from, we don't really call that "rapid improvement" ;)

But our rankings wouldn't change even after +2s ;)

And it's not because of the fact that it got us lost that he should change his GPS, it's because it's annoyingly talkative :p

Actually, most cube manufacturers in China call Rubik's cubes as Magic cubes on their packaging cos they can't use the Rubik's brand name. That's why people tend to call them Magic cubes as well

I think it's due more to the fact that there isn't a widely accepted Chinese translation for Rubik, than to copyright/trademark issues. The most common and well-accepted translation is 魔术方块, which literally means "magic cube".
