Ok so this may sound weird but why is there no name for the FTO?
While being a descriptive name, Face Turning Octahedron is kinda weird — its not like we call megaminx “FTD” (face turning dodecahedron).

I think a cool alternative would be “Octaminx”.
Every other WCA official platonic solid (besides cube) ends in -minx. Why not FTO?

idk i just thought this would be a cool idea.

There's already a puzzle called the octaminx.

I completely agree. FTO isn’t a name, and that’s a real shame.
Plus, searching for such a short acronym yields tons of results, most of which are unrelated to the topic.
Even if “Octaminx” is already used for some obscure puzzle, it would still be better than FTO.
Unfortunately, we were already talking about this a year and a half ago when FTO started to gain popularity, and nothing has changed since then.
The WCA needs to settle on a different name for things to change.

I agree that FTO deserves a more marketable and catchier name yo

Maybe Octaminx

That doesn’t really matter. FTO is fine at this point. Nobody was complaining that clock was called clock, and nobody calls the NxNs their actual names either like Rubik’s Revenge or the Professor Cube.

Tony Fisher has been asked if using the name Octaminx for FTO is okay and reportedly said yes. It came up in the FTO discord years ago along with the discussion. The name FTO has suck, gives the nice event_id of fto,

The name has stuck and does it really matter? It has a nice descriptive name unlike anything else. Octaminx is the only other name with any level of traction and that level is so low and only exists cause same kids don't like FTO

I mean it’s like calling a 4x4 a 4x4 and not Rubik’s Revenge
It’s pretty unnecessary to give FTO a name since the term FTO has already stuck onto the community. It would also cause more confusion to switch the names.
this is also a really good option bc fto is short and concise.

btw why cant we call 3x3x3 a 27 🥀

wca do you like my decision

Also, we already have so many minxes. Pyraminx, Megaminx, Kilominx, Flowerminx, Gigaminx, Teraminx, Petaminx, Examinx, All-The-SI-Prefix-Minx, you already have to use more brainpower to decipher them compared to FTO. If we add Octominx / Octaminx, it feels like it just gets lost in the family, like the 11th child. "So, Octaminx, you're the 8 layered dodecahedron puzzle?" "Nope... Guess again."
