why is the scramble only 16 moves?

. . . i thought all wca scrambles were 20 moves . . .

side note: still faster than my average cross 👶👋😂
TNoodle (official scramble generator) generates a random cube position and then solves it and (inverts the solution and) provides that as the scramble. Technically any random cube position is possible to be generated.

From the Facebook group I'm part of I saw a photo of the scramble sheet, it was short, but that's not completely uncommon.

All cube positions can be solved in 20 moves or less, most can be solved in 18 or fewer. Having a minimum scramble length of 20 would be arbitrary as the scrambles are not necessarily optimal. See also FMC WRs

Some clarifications:

1) ALL rubiks cube scrambles (wca and non approved scrambles) are technically possible to be solved in 20 moves or less. But except for FMC it is unheard for a scramble to be solved in 20 moves. Even 60 moves is pretty good and 40 for the top people on a good scramble. Unless it was an insane scramble I don't see anyone solving a cube in 20 moves in a standard 3x3 round. Often those 20 move solutions are only something a computer would find or a person if they spent hours looking at it. It's not something you find in 15 seconds.

2) According to the WCA a valid scramble must require at least 2 moves to solve. But I don't think a 2 move scramble would ever actually fly in comp. From what I can tell. So far this WR is valid and the scramble was both correct and legit in accordance with regulations.

3) Teodor did 29 moves this WR which is considered very good and extremely rare to solve with that few moves.

4) the number of moves on the scramble itself and number of moves to solve a cube aren't related once you've done more than a few moves to scramble it.
