I was just wondering how people executed / recoginzed their PLLs. Do most people recognize a case and perform it without matching it up, or do people match up correct pieces with the first two layers and then do a cube rotation to execute the PLL. I don't know which one is faster, but I was just wondering what people do.

I just starting doing it without matching it up, recognition is a little long at the moment so it's not much faster, but with practice it's probably at least a second faster.

80% of the time i match up, unless i instantly recognize the case.

G is the hardest PLL to recognize without matching up, hands down. The ones I usually have to match is G, N, E, R's half the time, A's half the time.
The PLL's with blocks are the easiest to recognize.

As i almost have to match all the time, and N's and R' but not R(i know that sounds weird).

also corwin, will i see you at Berkeley winter/spring this year if i go ? cuz i live in soCal, haha.

I always look for the pieces that are in the right place and go from there.

G's are easy to recognize without matching...Just look for the 2x2x1 and look for the other 2 of the same colors as you normally would solve it. E is also easy to do. Something hard to do without matching would be an A or V because they are so similar looking.

i usually dont match easy block patterns, but i have to match G's and R's otherwise i can't tell them apart. they both have the 1 2x1x1 block and nothing else -_-;

i also have quite a bit of trouble recognizing E, i have to auf for the centers ;(
edit: i can tell it's an E right away (no blocks at all and different corner colors is how i do it) but i can't tell which way the E is facing until i auf. any ideas? >_<;

Well on the R's the 2x1x1 is right next to the 2 corners that you're supposed to recognize for the G's. The G's have the 2x1x1 away from the 2 corners.
For E, just look at an edge, and see if any of the 2 corners it's touching shares a color with it, if it does, then that is the side that has the 2 corners you're switching.

For E, I just look and see if nothing matches. For G, two of the corners match on one face and a different corner is paired with an edge. For R, two of the corners match on one face and one of them is paired with an edge. For V and A, I AUF.
