Generally, I like to hold one of the three cubes one handed and do the moves. My writing hand holds the pen throughout unless I am done with my writing part.
My thumb rule is to have one cube dedicated for normal scramble, one for inverse scramble and the third cube for an alternative promising start, or for figuring out alternative commutators for the same case.
Notes:
The idea for this post was after seeing Jayden's new video where he filmed the entire hour attempt from top view, and I was able to get some ideas about how he holds the pen and the cube. And how many turns he does, and when does he turn+solve the remaining part.

Notes:
- Stickers are not in the picture for advanced FMC solves as Domino reduction is used.
- Most of the top solvers do mental tracing and delete a case without trying it out on the cube, because of their experience.
- But for many intermediate solvers, it is important to tryout a lot of EOs, DRs, skeletons and skips as possible.
- I feel it is safe to write a backup by the 40th minute, drop the pen, and go rogue on our previous starts and look for something better.
