What Does Everyone Think Is The Biggest Change In Speedcubing From 2010?

*sits down* *sees interesting thread* *ahh... finally some food for thought* here we go:

Puzzles is definitely one of the biggest factors since cubing revolves around the hardware available. Notable flag ship companies, such as Gan, Moyu, X-man Designs, Dayan, Qiyi, etc. Have brought much to the table in all events, and revolutionized the modern speedcube.

Another large factor is the recent Covid-19 Pandemic. In my opinion, the Community got faster over the Pandemic. People were spending more time at home, and speedcubers had more time to speedcube. Social media provided people with ideas of how to stay busy at home, and learning how to Solve a Rubiks cube was a common suggestion. Over the Pandemic, cubers from all over the world connected through social media platforms, such as this one, and communicated more effectively rather than via in-person.

Personally, I don't think it has changed that much. At the sole heart of our cubing passion, it's just a nerdy hobby. While it may look different on paper, cubing is simply too complex to be spelled out. Cubing is ever changing yet ever-remaining. Therefore, I think that change in cubing is unique for every individual speedcuber.

The two changes I mentioned previously are simply variables that effect the image of Speedcubing as a whole, but on the note of individual change, the biggest change for me in my speedcubing journey was joining this forum in March of this year. I had always been one of those hundreds of "guests" viewing the platform, and when I got my own email account, I couldn't wait to join the party.

To conclude, this "change in cubing" is different for everyone. Everyone is on their own path, and as a whole, I don't think that cubing will ever really change.

Thanks for the thought invoking post. Really made me reflect.

puzzles, wca, quality, community...ect.
I don't have time to write a long post like @1x1 wr holder! did, but here is my take:

WCA has changed a lot, and that is proved with feet and skewb. Puzzles are another one, with magnets and maglev, and more recently edge-core magnets. Community. I could say a whole lot, but I don't have time. The community is still great, and is expanding a lot. However, from what I have heard, cubing is becoming more competitive and less fun for some people.

That's my take, thanks for reading.

Since 2010, in almost every event, times for WR average have since halved. The only events that have not halved since 2010 are FMC, and OH.
Kinda crazy how Feliks’ 6.88 from 2015 is still 4th in the world, and just 0.68 seconds away from tying the (current) world record. So, Feliks actually still break the OH WR.

It could be too simple of an observation, but hardly anyone gets excited when new WRs are set (compared to like they did back then). Back then, if someone got a WR, it was like a hurricane was coming. But now it's just like, "oh, another afternoon thunderstorm".
A-hem, 3.13.

@Christopher Mowla is the only one in this thread so far who is qualified to answer this question. It is funny seeing the number of 2023 joined accounts giving answers.

My memory is hazy but I remember Feliks had just come into the scene when before it was like Erik and maybe Rowe Hessler. Cubing was already very competitive which is why I didn't go to a comp back then. People were much more DIY with their cubes, doing spring swaps and filing down pieces, and swapping sticker shades (pretty much everyone uses the same sticker lessshades now). The YouTube community was much smaller and it was in general way less competitive than it is now.

If you look at older BLD WRs, you would see them making lots of noise, both the spectators and the person who got the WR. We all know that this is no longer the case, even whispering you got WR could be considered a distraction by some.

you will probably make a decent politician one of these days
I will vote for you as mayor of the forum count on it
(but not at THE Forum... et tu Brute?)😉

The community has gradually gotten significantly younger, the difference in puzzle capabilities between then and now is drastic, and as mentioned previously in this thread, the world records are broken far more frequently (and aren't seen as much of a big deal as they used to be). Newer cubers will also never understand the pain of exploding cubes during competition--it's honestly rare to even see pops anymore (besides occasionally on big cubes).

Also, stickered cubes are rare to see in competition now, since many manufacturers don't even make stickered versions of speedcubes lately.

I still use an MF3RS2M (Black) with custom sticker shades for OH. I think it was one of the only stickered cubes at my last comp.

I believe it was Simon Kellum, current Pyraminx single WR holder. He was doing a 2x2 solve and his 2x2 just exploded into bits and pieces. I didn't even know that was possible 😂
