Yiheng's Mom slapping Yiheng in Public

This thread has gotten too far. I created it only to show how some people think YiHeng chose to do this hobby, and even though he does have fun doing it, his mom wants him to do it. I wouldn't call it forced, but it is unlikely to conclude that choosing this hobby was 100% his choice, unlike most of us.

Someone on reddit had a really nice comment, "Anyone who supports YiHeng’s mom now is clearly in the wrong". There is no 100% guarantee that the reason of the slap was for getting two sixes, but that is likely the reason for the slap. However, a lot of people said that YiHeng's mom is only doing the best for him, and that she is 100% doing the right thing. I disagree with that, because shouting isn't that bad, and again parents do that sometimes, but a slap in public because your son got "bad" times (6's is still world class) is completely unnecessary and clearly shows child abuse. That is definitely not the right way to raise a kid. Discipline is needed, but too much can really affect a child. Cubing is meant to be fun, and no one should be forced to do it.

Jumping to conclusions and telling a parent how to raise their child are two things that never end in disaster
Scolding a kid is one thing. Hitting your kid in public, is child abuse IMO. I'm not telling YiHeng's Mom how to raise her child, all I'm saying is that there is a difference between raising a child and child abuse.

People on the cubers reddit have confirmed that the two sixes were the reason for the slap.

Half of the thread is just people who don't know much about East Asian culture, and making assumptions about things. We don't even really know the reason of the slap, no reason was mentioned in the video. (The reddit posts that say it was because of the 6s seem to be rehashes of what everyone else is saying, and I would like to know their sources, I would like to hear from people who were at the comp to say what the reason for the slap was)

Exactly. It’s not uncommon at all in any Asian fam tbh even till nowadays, but this doesn’t mean that it’s the best way to teach their kids to be a good person in the future. As someone who actually knows YiHeng’s fam and also part of the Chinese cubing community in person, I would say that most of the time his mom is reasonable, and also feeling proud of YiHeng, especially within the Chinese cubing community. However, under certain circumstances her mom may sometimes go irrational and also kinda venting her emotions on YiHeng, which is not a great thing to see.

As from my observation:
YiHeng’s mom MBTI: ENFJ
YiHeng’s MBTI: ISTJ
As non-Chinese cuber who can actually have chance to communicate with Chinese cubers in person and in their first languages including some of the mainland dialects, I have already tried my best to give my comment out objectively. (I’m a Singaporean-Japanese born in Hong Kong and I speak 5 languages)
I would rather trust my own observations in person

Feel like most of these secondary sources are just dumb, like l just don’t think getting 2 6s can be a reason at all if anyone here actually know them. The slap is for real tho, just not sure why
Yeah, Yiheng has gotten worse results before (Getting 3 sixes in an average, getting a 6 average, counting a 7, losing worlds) and yet there have been no records to my knowledge of his mom beating Yiheng up for those things, at least in public. Not saying the 2 6s are not a possibility, but there just does not seem to be enough evidence for me that the 6s are the reason for the slaps. It could be for the monkey league middle finger for example (which is worse than getting 6s imo) or any other reason.

Also it really depends on the scrambles tbh
