This is terrible. Apparently its just because he got 2 6 second solves in a row, which makes this situation even worse.
Honestly, I think my parents are proud that I can SOLVE a rubiks cube. Let alone in less than a minute. I would tolerate a little scolding, but a slap? Overkill

This is terrible.
The community needs to condemn this
unfortunately, this is not the solution. the wca needs to keep in mind that any actions against the mother can affect Yiheng negatively. In asian culture, if the name of the family is disgraced by association with the child, the child is often murdered. Yiheng wang is not the only one in the world that has received this type of treatment. He'll manage.

edit: this post has received negative reaction. I apologize for improper clarification. please read following posts

I meant the cubing community outside of the WCA

I believe this was for flipping off the camera in monkey league against Matty. From what I heard, he was refusing to do an apology video. I still think his mother was wrong though

I don't think it's that extreme...

I never found it acceptable for parents to hit their kids at all and especially here where its just because he couldn't match the colors of a literal plastic cube fast enough which just makes all of this 10x worse since its such a stupid reason
I'm not really sure whether this is abuse or not (trust me I know what abuse is and isn't) but its still a horrible thing from his mother

Dang that’s so stupid. No kid should be punished for not solving a twisty puzzle fast enough. It was so sad to me to see a 9 year old child looking so sad and depressed.

Just because there is culture and tradition doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do.

just ask my parents, grandparents, my grandparents, and all who came before them. If you forgot to make rice, you get your hand broken, you get an A- on the test, you get locked in your room. Asians invented extreme. But to be fair, yes you have to do something pretty bad (like stealing) to get killed, but there have been cases.

Don't get me wrong man, I'm on your side. I wholeheartedly agree. Infact, I despise that portion of my culture. It's just that it's not that strange to me, and I know that people like Yiheng who experience such abuse have become amazing people. no child should be physically reprimanded for a mistake. humans are not animals that need to learn from fear. I'm sorry if my post came across as sounding "mean" or disrespectful.

Yes, he can manage being hit, but that does not make it okay or ethical.

Being hit is mentally damaging for any child, no matter the person.

How would you feel if you were a famous cuber and you got slapped in the face by your parent at a cubing competition in front of other people?
