Clock and Other Things (Clock is Back)

Current 7-Simul stats (from a new session--I'm at around 1,500 solves total). I have DNFd out of several potential sub-5 averages now, but success will happen very soon.

We’ve done it! Sub-5!

Good morning (EST) everyone,

I've been very busy, but the breaks inbetween practice sessions have proven useful for improvement. I have a research presentation this weekend, so I've been preparing for that.

My new 7-Simul PB single is 3.80, and my new Ao5 PB is 4.92. Additionally, I got an Ao12 of 5.16 yesterday with 7-Simul, which I think may be an overall PB. I have a competition in six days, and I'm nervous since I've only really practiced 7-Simul. I'm also nervous to debut 7-Simul at a comp--don't want to choke and DNF, as I'm 1st on the psych sheet.

Goals for my upcoming comp

So, I've essentially only practiced 7-Simul for the last month and a half with some megaminx, pyraminx, and 5x5 sprinkled in. It goes without saying, my cubing skills are a complete mess at the moment, particularly in the realm of 3x3. I haven't competed since Mid-Atlantic Championship, so my nerves are pretty bad.

I'm making the potentially rash decision to debut 7-Simul officially. I have two rounds of clock, so I can safety the first round if I absolutely have to. I'm most worried about going over memo time and DNFing. Even with flip, I check both sides for the remainder of a non-final rounds if I get a DNF partway through the average.

My 7-Simul memo time is ~11-13 seconds, so it's really cutting it close. I'll see how doing a 7-Simul solve feels, and if it's absolutely not going to work, I'll use flip for the remainder of the round. I'm not risking the rare chance I get to compete DNFing my main event. That being said, I still have faith that I could pull off a good average with 7-Simul if I don't over-warm-up or put too much pressure on myself. I'm trying to start attending comps for fun, and not to solely evaluate them on the sheer basis of results.

Without further ado, here are my events and goals:

2x2: PR average and single. Single is hard to predict with 2x2 as a very fast event. I wold like to get a sub-4 average soon, as I consistently get sub-4 averages at home.

3x3: Just make round 2 with something sub-18. PR would still be very cool.

4x4: PR single and average. MAKE CUTOFF. I have multiple 5x5 and 7x7 averages/means but no 4x4 average. It's about time.

Pyraminx: PR average and possibly single. Again, single is difficult to predict with fast events.

Megaminx: PR Average (Sub-1:30) and possibly PR single. I've been practicing a lot of mega, and I average sub-1:30 very consistently at home.

Clock: WR single, WR average (sub-2, preferably). Nah jk, that's for next year. It's about time I beat my 5.75 average. I got that so long ago, and I can do FAR better. I choke my averages for the most part, but NOT this time. We will see some immaculately executed 7-Simul solves.

Comp results weren’t great for the most part

Highlights

PR single and average on 4x4 (1:04.36; 1:09.65), PR 3x3 single (13.19), and PR Megaminx average (1:27.99)

I met @SkewbIsTheBestEvent and @Gecko777. They’re both very cool.

Less than stellar moments:

Clock in general was not great. I decided to safety and use flip for round 1. As I had barely practiced flip in the past two months, my rad skills had dissipated. For finals, I attempted 7-Simul for the first solve, messed up, then solved the clock with flip and performed the remaining solves with flip. I have a comp coming up next month. By then I anticipate I’ll be more comfortable with 7-Simul under pressure.

The venue was VERY loud

I was 0.06 off my PR Pyraminx average

New 7-Simul PB average. Nerves cost me overall PB on last solve, but we’re getting closer.

New 7-Simul PB average. Only 0.16 off from current PB with flip! I’ve gotten 5 sub-5 7-Simul averages this evening, including one which ties this average.

I know this isn't really on topic for you, but as someone just doing beginner method, what are some tips for learning 7-Simul?
Also, great job! You're doing great with these times
Thank you! I’ve been practicing as much as I can, given how busy my days can be.

My first tip is to just drop flip completely and exclusively solve 7-Simul if you’re serious about it. I’m worse at flip now, but it helped me get better with 7-Simul when I wasn’t actively practicing two methods as once. Focus on accuracy and play it safer at first even if you have to use lower TPS. DNFs are easy to get, as you’re one-looking it, so it’s important to ease into higher TPS the more comfortable you get with accurate turning. Watch Tommy’s tutorial—he explains all calculations very clearly. Also, you should come up with good words to use for distinct letter pairs early on (e,g., B+H = Bhangra, I+C = Ice, or G+H = Ghost).
