How do I explain, with some detail, how to explain speedcubing to someone who’s never solved a cube? Not how to solve a cube, why people spend hundreds, or thousands of hours on cubing? All I can think to say is “it’s the addiction of getting better times” or “monkey brain like seeing number go down” but after that I have nothing.

So, you could either just say why you cube or why people get addicted to cubing. I just don’t wanna sound dumb when I try to explain cubing to people not familiar with the community!

We like cubing because it gives us a purpose in life it gives a goal to stride for. Sub 10 Sub 20 , etc etc.Everytime we do accomplish our goal there is a new one to stride for. Also there are plenty of different puzzles from as easy as a 2/2 to as hard as 7/7. Also what prostar said

we like it because it's a perfect combination of intellectual and physical stimulation. on the intellectual side, there are always new techniques and events to learn. people with logical and analytical personalities love this aspect. on the physical side, it's a repetitive physical motion and satisfying

another reason is because some personality types love quantifying things. when you get a new PB, that's a concrete number proving that you have improved.

there's also the social scene with online groups and comps

Cubing is all about being fast at recognizing patterns, and execute a sequence of moves depending on the pattern.
The move sequence can be intuitive, or algorithms consisting of typically 4-12 moves.

People usually compete with themself, trying to improve. You can improve by learning more algorithms, better algorithms, faster execution, faster recognition, or just learning a different method. Many of the world's best cubers uses a different method and algorithm set when solving One-Handed, and solving blindfolded is very different as well.
