Ok so I haven't started doing 'official' scrambles yet (should I?) just randomly scrambling and solving. Got a PB last night of 1:09. Considering my original target was sub one minute, I'm glad I'm almost getting it in single solves.

Some more data, just for record keeping purposes :D

Older averages:

16/4 5.75 mins
17/4 7 mins
18/4 5.8 mins
19/4 3.5 mins
21/4 2.89 mins
22/4 2.41 mins
23/4 2.44 mins
24/4 2.84 mins
25/4 1.98 mins
26/4 2.17 mins
27/4 2.03 mins

If you do manual scrambles it can happen that you don't scramble it enough and still have blocks and stuff that makes the solve easier than with an official scramble.
If you watch the scrambling, you try to break up such blocks and make it harder than neccessary.

That's why we use machine generated scrambles.

But usually as a beginner you can't really take that advantage, so it's also OK to do manual scrambles.
There an other advantage of using official scrambles: You will learn the notation and have it easier to learn algs written in that notation.

Just keep on practicing and you will break the minute soon and go on to your next goal ;)

Thank you @OldSwiss, That makes sense. I have noticed there can be a wide range of difficulty with random scrambles. I might start using them to make times more consistent, if nothing else!

There is still a wide range of difficulty with randomly generated scrambles.
But yes, it's best to not handscramble when possible

how close are you to reaching your goal now?

Closer! And further away hahaha.

OK, so I've shaved about 30 seconds off my average since last post, and hit a PB of 1:04. But with the method I was using it's plateued around 1:30, unless it's a lucky solve. So I've started learning F2L. So a little slower at the minute as I learn that, but will re quicker once it's more intuitive ;)

The below had my PB, but also a recent pw (personal worst LOL) solve 7 or 8 was like 3 minutes after I botched the last layer

Well, keep practicing slowly and fast! Slow is to get used to the skills you are developing and knock out your bad habits, and fast is for you to practice the skills you developed.

So a bit over two weeks later, I've managed to hit under a minute solves!!!! I was so excited yesterday at the 55:36, then I hit 53:51 today!!!!

I know where I can still improve more, so even with just F2L and a sort of 'advanced basic' method, I know I can easily average under a minute, not just single solves :D
