Average of 5: Do five solves, drop best and worst. Average of remaining 3
Mean of 3: Do three solves. Calculate the average directly.

So mean and average in English mean the same but in speedsolving usually it refers to mean of 3 or average of 5.
More generally I think (maybe someone can confirm) that average refers to dropping solves and mean not dropping solves when calculating.
