Will learning 2x2 help with 3x3 at all?

Hey hey,

My main goal is learning how to be very efficient with 3x3 while being reasonably fast. That being said, I have bought a 4x4, a 5x5, and a 7x7 because there are some transferable skills where you can better your 3x3 ability such as look ahead, the same algorithms apply once you solve the centers and edges, etc. Is there any of that with 2x2? Is there no reason to learn it if your goal is 3x3 efficiency? I practice 3x3 a lot and sometimes it’s nice to practice your skills and also switch it up a little. Also perhaps a 2x2 may help in some scenarios?

Thanks everyone,

Rainger

Megaminx is an event where it is really tough to be efficient, I would recommend trying that out as that can help you with 3x3!

I don't think 2x2 will really help you that much with 3x3.
Would megaminx logic help with cubing logic at all?

I
Two by two can help with predicting pll but other than that, nothing else i can see.

I never would have saw that connection. Thank you!

Well, he probably won't be using PLL if he's going for efficiency, so even that isn't that relevant.
What would you recommend for finishing the cube efficiently? Is there a set of algs for this or something else?

As far as i'm aware of, generally if you are going for efficiency you normally just use intuition to solve the cube. I don't know very much about the subject, but if you search "FMC" on the forums you will probably find some good info.

Will do. Thanks.

I dont think FMC will help with speedsolving
I’d like to find a way to achieve both speed and efficiency someday. I felt being more efficient now may allow me to be efficient and fast later. I’m no pro though so maybe I’m not right here.

Hey! I just saw this discussion, and saw people give some good answers, but I think the key to becoming efficient with any method is to watch walkthrough solves by people like Kian Mansour (A crazy fast roux user) on youtube because they will show you really interesting things that you may not already know about the best way to build blocks and execute L6E. As to your question, I don't think 2x2 will help with efficiency. The best puzzle for efficiency is like @Owen Morrison said, megaminx. If you don't already have one the MGC or X-Man Galaxy V2 M megaminxes are great puzzles.

Happy cubing!!!

yes but how will doing the inverse scrambles, insertions and domino reduction help in speedsolves
I think you and I define efficiency differently. I’m not talking about least moves. I’m talking about cutting the fat where possible. Like my main method is roux, which focuses on being slightly more efficient than CFOP, I said nowhere about inverse scrambles, domino reduction, etc, just talking about not doing needless moves. When I started my first block in roux took way more moves than it needed to be but over time my first block is getting more efficient. My question is more from a farther view. I wanted to know if 2x2 will help me in 3x3. I think we are talking about something else right now.

I love watching kian and critical cubing for their roux videos. I can only hope to be that good some day. So because you brought it up, do you think megaminx practice would help my 3x3?

Yes I feel that the block building aspect of megaminx (if you use the bálint method) would be extremely useful for 3x3 F2B because it forces you to be creative with block building solutions, and the sheer number of pieces on a megaminx strains your look-ahead, which of course is essential for any method.

I appreciate your input. I’ll look around for a solid megaminx on scs and the cubicle!

Also one thing I saw you say was that you use SCS lubricant. While there is nothing wrong with that, IMO the cubicle has much better lube options. I would recommend DNM-37 and both Max lubes.

I’ll definitely take a look. To reach that $39 free shipping sometimes you gotta throw some lube in your cart. Now I know what to get. Thanks :)
