Making shapes with a solved cube

Hi,
I finally am able to solve the cube myself -Thanks for your help-.Anyway,I like to make shapes with the cube after I solve it -it makes the cube look nice-,like the easy making"X" on every side of the cube.But the problem is that I only make things after making many unnecessary moves which makes me ruin the whole thing later in the process of undoing the shape . I hope anyway can help me by showing some steps or hints to how to
1. make an "+" on every side of the cube
2.and how to solve the cube but with all the centers wrong positioned.
Keep in mind that I want to do these from an already solved cube

thanks,so basically it's using the equators (or er,I am not sure if that's what they call the middle ones) to switch the centers. maybe similar to the three corner cycle or the three edge cycle right?
