Hey,

I used to be an avid cuber for about 2-3 years. My average wasn't the best, but it wasn't horrid either, somewhere between 16-18 (I quit at a point where I was improving like a second a month, which I do regret, but I just didn't have the time to cube for 3-4 hours a day).

I've done a few solves here and there but largely haven't touched my cube since I put it down one day. Just decided to do a quick Ao12 for fun. Forget quite a few algorithems (mainly OLL, since that's what I was mid-learrning, but I've also lost 2-3 PLL algs).

I actually surprised myself with how I did, managing a sub-20 Ao12, when my old average was only a few seconds faster, max.

Nice! I can barely ever get sub 20 solves, can you give tips?(My TPS is like 12)
Your tps in a solve is based on the total amount of time in the solve, including pauses and lockups. Maybe your tps is 12 when doing triggers or algs like t or h perms, but 12 tps over a whole solve is superhuman.
Edit: I'm not trying to put you down, I just think you don't fully understand what tps is.

I wouldn't say it's superhuman. I know one of Feliks' Friday fours was over 13 TPS, and I'm pretty sure Lucas has gotten 12 at some point (I know for a fact he has several over 10.) I also wouldn't be surprised if Max Park had a few, and I wouldn't put it past Mats Valk, Bill Wang... really anyone in the top 10 for 3x3 average.

Edit: totally forgot to include the main reason I wrote this post before posting :P
As far as getting faster goes, you'll hear this a lot, but the main thing you want to work on is lookahead. 12 TPS on your algorithms is more than enough. I don't do above 10 on most of my algs, but I'm fairly comfortable saying I'm sub-15, and I don't even know full OLL. There are a few ways to work on lookahead:
1. Use a metronome. If you don't have one, you can probably find one online. Start with a slow tempo, like 45-60 BPM, and try to do a turn every tick without stopping. Then gradually increase the pace until you can turn consistently at 3-5 TPS for the entire solve. F2L is usually about 40 moves, so 3-5 TPS will have F2L done in about 10 seconds. Spam all the TPS you want on the last layer, but try to start recognition before you've stopped turning the cube.
2. Do all the execution with your eyes closed. Basically, you figure out how to do the cross, then close your eyes and execute the cross, then figure out how to do F2L-1, then close your eyes and execute F2L-1, etc. This teaches you to not have to be looking at what you're executing. Ideally, during a solve, you're looking for how to do the next step while executing your current step.

And, of course, the most important thing is to practice.

Sorry what I meant was consistently 12 tps every solve. :)

Yeah true my bad. My algs are insane, but but my lookahead/pauses are bad
