[WR] Megaminx 59.33 Single Takumi Yoshida

He tried 50 in competition? o_0 insaaaaaaaane

Maybe he's trying to get in the biggest possible attempt before we switch to One Hour Multi ;-)

he told me before that one day he wanted to eventually try 100 in comp.
I hope we see that before One hour Multi :p :)

Seeing that attempt after the change wouldn't be so bad though ;)

edit: nevermind the results are up!

Oh wow - Ryosuke Mondo multiBLD 33/50 in 6:03:13! He tried one in competition!

I guess he just wanted to try it once before hour-blind takes over. Not a bad attempt getting him 3rd place (I feel bad for Mike though)

But for the MegaMinx WR I can't help but thinking "lucky" solve. He is obviously very skilled, but a sub 60 solve and two 1:20-ish (1:19.09 1:18.52 59.33) solves seems like a huge difference.

Ah, but tim, if you watch his youtube he usually gets success rates similar to that. His last few multibld youtube videos were 32/50, 36/51, 7/7, 18/24, 15/20. In a way getting 2/3 of 50 cubes is more impressive than getting all of 10 cubes, or even 20 :)

Only 66%? I think he tried way too many cubes.

It seemed like when Rowe did the 19/33 at the US Open, his mind wasn't focused. (I hope it wasn't partly my fault - there were a lot of distractions in the room - one of the big keys to doing well there was to be able to handle all the distractions well, which I think I managed to do that day.) Someone who knew him commented it seemed like his memory wasn't working quite right that day. Perhaps that's what happened to Mondo too. I know I once had an attempt at home where I got something like 60% - I was just too tired that day to be trying one that big, but I had promised myself I would try it, so I did anyway. It might be the same here.

Actually, I disagree with this. I think our current metric is actually pretty accurate. I think 2/3 of 50 cubes is roughly equivalent in difficulty to getting 100% of 16 cubes. Which still means Arnaud shouldn't feel bad for me - Mondo deserves to be ranked higher than me.

Well, it's only a difference of one point (33/50 = 16 pts versus 15/15), so it's kind of debatable. But yeah, I agree, 20/20 is more impressive than 33/50.

Still, Mondo actually broke a bunch of records: most cubes attempted in competition; most cubes solved after a multi in competition; most cubes not solved after a multi in competition; and most time spent on a multi in competition. It's crazy to even imagine that many.

I also think it's amazing that he tried 50 cubes and yet only exceeded the previous record for most time spent on a multi in competition by a fairly small amount. It wasn't quite as fast as his most recent video, but it was a pretty fast attempt for so many cubes!

Just think how cool it would have been to have been there to see that big wall of cubes in front of him during the attempt.

Oh, and to bring this thread back on topic, I'd also like to say I'm pretty blown away by Takumi Yoshida's sub-minute megaminx solve. Very, very cool.

It's maybe a lucky solve, but maybe not.
I often have big difference between my megaminx times.
Once, I got an 1min01 solve at home, unlucky, and just after a 1min2x
You can have a very good looking ahead on one solve and a not so good looking ahead on the others.
The only "luck" is maybe just having this good solve during the competition, and that's not really "luck"

I saw you do one of those good solves (1.05) in Switzerland. About 4 pairs in the whole solve were already connected and only needed 3 move insertions.
But from the reaction on this solve I don't get just a "wow, I just did sub 60"-feeling. I am getting a "This is going very nice. Should be personal best. Skip ,:eek: I just got sub 60 :eek:"-feeling. ( should be pronounced as wooow,:eek: as woooohooooohoooohoooo)
If only I could see what is going on on that Minx.....grrrrr zoom-function grrrrr

I don't even believe in lucky Megaminx solves (unless maybe the star is already built :D) as well as I don't believe in lucky solves at 4x4x4 or bigger cubes.

With anything with many steps you can have a sort of lucky time. You don't really skip anything, but the efficiency of the solve is much better than normal. Once in maybe 2-3 months I get a 5x5 solve like that and some of these solves have been personal bests by a large margin.

As for the entire minx pairing up: I can't believe it :O The chance of it being that easy is just so small for a random scramble. Do you think it could have something to do with the new scrambles we are using (only ~2^70 combinations)?

I don't think that scramble was particularly easy. Look at the other competitors' results: no one did his best time on the third attempt, except the last one who obviously doesn't practice megaminx very much. I agree that more efficient solves than usual happen from time to time, that's what gave me an unexpected qualification for the 1st round of 5^3 at Euro 2008 for example :)

For me, on megaminx, it's not scrambles that are easy - it's solves that are easy. There are occasional solves where all the pairs just magically come together, and the last layer almost seems to solve itself. In order for those things to happen, you have to get lucky with solving a particular scramble in a particular way to make that happen (solve the beginning in a particular order), which is why I say it's the solve that's lucky, not the scramble.

I'm no good at megaminx, but I've had some solves that are just way faster than my normal ability. I average around 3:00, but my best is 2:20 or so. I don't have nearly that big of a discrepancy between average and best on any cube puzzle.
