I've noticed that cubing has progressed to a point at which newcomers may never have a chance to achieve podium without years of diligence and practice.

For example, look at 3x3 OH results from the recent Norwich comp.

I'm thinking about organising a competition where everyone has a chance to win some prizes and glory!
The best way to do that was to hold lots of semi-random cube related mystery events, and include prizes for every round with consolation prizes for everyone.

Aside from WCA board approval, the only thing that keeps me from making this a reality is competitor interest.
I have the delegate, the funds, and the venue, but I'm not sure if cubers would be interested in a competition with 3 rounds of 3x3 and a bunch of random events.

Would you attend a competition if it had 3 rounds of 3x3 and several rounds of mystery/random/fun events?

It sounds very interesting, but I would stick to official WCA events. I would personally rather have a megacomp with some fun events though.

Honestly, you are the last type of person to be saying these type of things. Not that it's a bad thing, but I wouldn't expect a delegate to say, "Hey, lets organize a comp where it doesn't have any official events other than 3x3!"

Would you include 2bld? That's a fun event, and good for beginners learning to blind solve.

I voted yes on this, but this truth is I wouldn't attend unless it was in New South Wales. I would love to go but couldn't travel that far.

I think most cubers (new or old) compete to improve their own official times rather than to podium, unless it's a major competition. Random events can be fun, but if given the choice, with the limited time, I think even newcomers would prefer having more official events or more rounds of events.

After all, most competitions have very low funds. What can you really win?

Eh, I wouldn't like the idea of this comp because going to a comp where I have no chance of podiuming encourages me to improve.

I think this is an interesting idea, but I can't help but envision a sort of cuber's version of Let's Make a Deal:

"And the first person to show me a Mastermorphix gets a $25 Cubicle gift card!"

I wouldn't expect a delegate to say, "Hey, lets organize a comp where it doesn't have any official events other than 3x3!"

Delegates are probably the ones most likely to want something like this. More unofficial events = more events where regulations don't need to be followed, which means less stress and more fun.

I'd go if it was close, but I wouldn't travel more than I normally would for something like this.

And if I had to choose between unofficial events and extra chances to break my PBs in official events, it's not a hard debate. I always prefer official events over anything else.

Along the same line of thought, I think it would be cool if in average comps there were awards (not necessarily prizes) for most improved. The person who beat there pb (official WCA) by the highest percentage for 3x3x3 single, 3x3x3 average, and best improvement in any single event.

It wouldn't have to be exactly like this but I like the general idea and it wouldn't be to hard to implement. This would be something everyone would have a shot at. I think it would reward improvement and encourage less experienced competitors.

In Chile we did some mystery events with the same thinking in mind. We did it in lunch time or sometimes in the end before awards meanwhile we entered the times.

The events are random and fun, like starting with the cube unmounted and do it blindfolded and then solve it unblindfolded or team bld, even something not related to cube like thread a needle.

Its quite fun and you see all the new people trying to win or al least participated.

PD: Sorry if my english is not good :c
