Hi, nice to meet you all, i'm luke.
I'm new to cubing, and i was wondering if you could give me a few pointers. Sorry if my problems are too simple, i just wish to learn and not mess it up by diving in head first.

my question:
On the thread: Edit: How to get faster - test, thread it said on one of the steps..

Fridrich Method:
Current Average: 1:00-1:19
Goal Average: 40 - 50 seconds
Once you acheive these times;
-I strongly suggest you learn 4 look last layer. (Links to where to learn them will be at the bottom of this post.)
-DO NOT learn F2L yet.
Edge Orientation - 2 algorithms
Corner Orientation - 7 algorithms
Edge Permutation - 4 algorithms - Ua, Ub, Zb, H
Corner Permutation - 3 Algorithms Aa, Ab, E
Estimation Time: 3 weeks - 1.5 months
And i was wondering: What exactly does the 4LLL, include; i've tried to find some sort of help, but have struggled a bit.

What algorithm's should i learn for these steps, (if there are any specific)
And if you could link me?
Should i perhaps try and learn all of the OLL and PLL algorithms at once? or learn these 4LLL steps first?

My time's around 1.10, using the basic method, and before i came to this site, i started learning intuitive F2L, but after reading your post, i've decided maybe if i follow your steps i could get a more efficient learning method.

So, if you could; could you give me some pointers on 4LLL and what algorithms to learn from: PLL and OLL.

Thanks alot.
Luke.

(I hope this doesn't make me look too stupid, but i'm new to cubing probably about 3 weeks, and i'm eager to learn.)

First 2 looks: OLL
Last 2 looks: PLL

this is probably the most common way:

1st look: orienting edges, 4 cases (2nd cross)
2nd look: orienting corners, 8 cases (getting a solid colour on the U face)
3rd look: permuting corners, 3 cases
4th look: permuting edges, 5 cases (done)

www.badmephisto.com has everything you need, to be honest.

and also watch all of his tutorials, many, many times :)

(excluding the 2look OLL algs) ignore the 57 OLLs until you are less than 30s. its kinda a waste of time learning them earlier, you might as well be practicing your F2l.

i dont know them all, and im sub 20. for example, fazrulz averages like 13/14s, and he knows less than i do!

EDIT
to reply to your (slightly) later post...

first, learn the PLLs that are mentioned in that post, and learn the orientation algs off of badmephistos site. definitely finish the PLLs as soon as possible (well, not asap, but you definitely want to be 3 look :) ).

Thanks for the reply, so should i go straight ahead and try to learn all of OLL and PLL, or are there specific ones that are best to learn straight away?

Thanks again,
Luke

DO NOT learn all OLL and PLLs algorithms now. That is a total of 78 algorithms, and at your level it is not necessary. I average like 19 seconds now and I do not know all of the 78 algorithms (I know about 35).

Learn 2 Look OLL. There are 10 algorithms to that, and you can learn those algorithms here.

Learn 2 Look PLL also. That is 6 algorithms. You can learn those algorithms here.

Together, 2 Look OLL and 2 Look PLL make up 4 Look Last Layer (4LLL). 4LLL can be done very fast on the cube, some people can do it under 8 seconds (that is fast for 4LLL)

There isn't much of a point learning all the algorithms at once, because it's very hard to memorize 78. 2 Look OLL and 2 Look PLL are steps for learning full OLL and PLL. As you get better at the algorithms you will gradually learn more and more algorithms until you know all OLL and PLL. That may take a few months.

uh you should definitely start learning f2l if you want to get fast...

2 look oll and pll you can learn in like two hours

Actually, as a beginner, your goal might just be to solve the last layer with as few algorithms as possible -- Minimally one that orients edges, one that orients corners, one that moves corner pieces, one that moves edge pieces. So, you can get away with 4 simple algorithms, some of which might be used multiple times. Try Tyson's video at Rubiks.com for that. Or you can find and select the minimal algorithms from the complete set of OLLs and PLLs.

thank you everyone for your replies, it's been very useful.
I've gone ahead and printed off the alg sheets, and i'm going to try and learn these: 2 look OLL and 2 look PLL, whilst using what F2L i know, i'll perfect F2L later, when that's the main thing that's slowing me down.
Right now it's the last layer that's becoming an effort.

I'll let you know how i get on.
Thanks everyone for your help.

Luke.
