Name is Bill. I'm in my mid 30's and saw a rubik's cube on TV a couple days ago and I remembered I had never solved one so I popped over to Walmart and picked one up. Couple Google searches led me to badmephisto's site and while watching the video, I solved this monster for the first time.

Don't know if the hobby will stick, but the first time was pretty cool to see come together. I'm an engineer by trade, so I love seeing a good algorithm at work.

Open to suggestions and advice. I'm just looking for fun at this point

Engineers have money. Money buys lots of puzzles. Puzzles are fun. Buy lots of puzzles for fun.

Skewb, 2x2-7x7, pyraminx, megaminx, square-1, and clock are good ones to check out. They're the standard WCA competition ones.

Welcome! You'll know pretty quickly whether or not it will stick. If you are into the algs, CFOP is a good method for you. Though, as an engineer, you might like some more intuitive stuff. Also, There's quite a few 30+ year old solvers (myself included). I average under 20 seconds and Marcel is over 40 and averages similar (well, until he switched methods). Anyway, best of luck to you, and let me know if you have any questions... Also, get a decent speedcube :)

Welcome man! As DeeDubb said, try using a intuitive method as you are a engineer. Don't really worry though, intuitive methods have many algorithms too if you like them :D

Yeah, I'm fighting the urge to go buy a bunch until I can solve my walmart special from memory, but the urge is strong...

Very interested in the intuitive approach too, the musician in me likes seeing something fall together cause it's just right too.

Thanks for all the well wishing, y'all seem to be a great group.

Welcome, I think if you stick with it you will find you are in good company. I would suggest that if you enjoy it now, go ahead and make that $15 purchase and get a good speedcube, it will make the difference in allowing you to enjoy it more as you can do fingertricks and the turning is so much easier than a rubiks. Have fun!

edit: we have a saying "its not the cube its the cuber" which is true once you get A speedcube (any will do but ALL are better than a rubiks)

got the moyu multi-sized bundle from the cubicle ( 2x2, 3x3, 4x4), a moyu skrewb, and a Zanchi 3x3. What was I doing with that Rubik's??? Those Moyu feel like butter.

I was not successful in fighting this urge.

I've been speedsolving (well, trying to) for less than 3 weeks and I've already bought 8 different cubes (not to mention another 100 of one particular type).
